Greece plans to launch cryptocurrency capital gains tax: First exclusive tax framework for digital assets is about to be implemented
As European regulators significantly increase their regulatory transparency of investor exchange activities, Greece plans to introduce a 10% cryptocurrency capital gains tax, thereby establishing its first dedicated tax framework for digital assets. According to the draft bill issued by the Greek Ministry of Economy and Finance, the gains realized by individuals when transferring cryptographic assets will be taxed, but they will enjoy a tax exemption of 500 euros per year. The proposal is currently in a public consultation phase that runs until October 22 and is expected to be submitted to Parliament for review in early November.
This rule not only sets a nominal tax rate, but also establishes a cost-based calculation method, excluding exchange transactions between crypto assets from immediate capital gains tax, and establishing a separate 10% tax rate treatment mechanism for returns generated through pledges, loans and liquidity provision.
When will Greek cryptocurrency investors need to pay taxes?
For individuals, taxable income is usually equal to the difference between the acquisition price and disposal price of the crypto asset. If investors accumulate the same asset through multiple purchases, legislation requires the use of the average purchase price to determine the cost basis. Capital gains for the first 500 euros per year are exempted. Beyond this threshold, eligible gains will face the proposed 10% tax rate.
