Coinbase completes Deribit integration to open up compliant derivatives trading channels for U.S. institutions
Following the completion of account migration on October 1, Coinbase has officially completed its integration with Deribit. The move establishes a regulated path to allow eligible U.S. institutions to enter the derivatives market. The company said that such markets account for approximately 80% of global cryptocurrency trading volume.
Key Highlights
- U.S. institutions will have access to Derivbit's options and perpetual contracts through Coinbase Prime and Coinbase Financial Markets.
- The October 1 transfer transferred Coinbase International Exchange accounts, balances and positions to Deribit.
- Options services are expected to be available through Coinbase Prime in the coming weeks, with access for U.S. retail users scheduled to be launched later.
- The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) employee exemption obtained in May supports access to designated offshore derivatives under certain conditions.
Institutional access paths and timetables
Coinbase announced on October 7 that its international derivatives business has merged with Deribit. Eligible U.S. institutions will have access to the exchange's options and perpetual contract products through Coinbase Prime and Coinbase Financial Markets. The announcement pointed out that this structure provides U.S. institutions with a domestic regulated intermediary channel to access markets previously entered through offshore entities and independent trading systems. Among them, Coinbase Financial Markets is a commodity futures commission trader and is subject to supervision by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).
For institutional options trading, the company expects access through Coinbase Prime to be available in the coming weeks. The announcement also plans a phased retail user rollout plan: first to eligible customers outside the United States, and then to U.S. retail users later this year.
Prime Customer Operations Guide
Under Coinbase's plan, eligible U.S. institutions will leverage existing Prime relationships to access Derivbit options through Coinbase Financial Markets without having to complete the account opening process separately with a foreign exchange. In the customer guide released by the company, eligible Prime customers in the United States can immediately start the account opening process and trade options on Bitcoin, Ethereum and other assets after trading rights are activated. The company recommends that customers contact their account managers to confirm qualifications, understand account opening requirements and specific time.
The guidance states that for Prime customers, existing spot trading and account relationships remain unchanged. The company emphasized that the timetable for U.S. institutional options visits and the timetable for the completed migration of international exchanges are independent of each other.
While preparing for institutional access, Coinbase said it will offer options services to eligible non-U.S. retail customers in the coming weeks. According to an announcement on October 7, the opening phase for U.S. retail customers is scheduled for 2026.
The company pointed out that derivatives account for approximately 80% of global cryptocurrency trading volume, and that U.S. clients have long lacked compliance channels to enter large amounts of overseas options and perpetual contract activity.
CFTC employee exemption lays regulatory foundation
Previous reports showed that Coinbase announced its U.S. institutional derivatives access plan on May 29, thanks to the CFTC's action on a listing contract for Deribit FZE, its associated foreign trading venue. It was reported at the time that CFTC employees stated that certain cryptocurrency perpetual contracts described in Coinbase's request could qualify as "foreign futures" under Section 30.1 of the Commission Regulations. In addition, the CFTC has issued a conditional no-action position covering cases where client-owned digital goods and payments to stablecoins are transferred to foreign broker subsidiaries as margin.
At the time, Coinbase stated that institutions could start opening accounts through Coinbase Financial Markets. Derivbit options would be the first phase of the product, and other derivatives would be introduced later.
The May announcement described potential uses, including hedging, volatility trading, and basis strategies linked to Bitcoin. Coinbase also pointed out that U.S. institutions previously lacked compliance channels to enter overseas derivatives markets that handle trillions of dollars in annual activity.
Prior to this integration, it was reported in May that Coinbase had completed its $2.9 billion acquisition of Deribit in August 2025. The same report quoted company data showing that Deribit's trading volume exceeded US$185 billion in July 2025 and held approximately US$60 billion in open interest interest when the acquisition closed.
October 1 migration details
For institutional clients of Coinbase International Exchange, the migration guide documents the transfer of accounts, balances and positions to Deribit on October 1. According to the guidelines, the process cancels outstanding perpetual contract orders, settles positions at marked prices, and transfers the resulting balance. Subsequently, Coinbase rebuilt its position at the same settlement price by matching migration transactions, and the entire transition process took about 60 minutes.
On the technical level, Coinbase instructs institutional clients to replace their trading connections on international exchanges with new endpoints on the merged platform. The guide states that historical international exchange records will still be accessible for a limited period of time, but these transaction history records will not appear on the merged platform.
For customers who trade perpetual contracts through the Coinbase app or website, the company states that transfers are completed automatically and positions are settled and rebuilt in the process. Coinbase said there will be no transaction or settlement fees for the transition.
Clearing and stock futures infrastructure is improved
At the same time, Coinbase obtained the registration status of the USDC clearing house on September 28, and the relevant report was released on September 29. The CFTC has registered Coinbase Clearing LLC for clearing fully collateralized futures, futures options and swap contracts. In the announcement, Coinbase said the clearing house would use USDC as collateral and provide round-the-clock settlement support. The company describes the approval as the completion of its "end-to-end derivatives infrastructure" that complements its regulated exchange and futures brokerage businesses.
According to registration reports, Coinbase Clearing's license covers fully mortgaged products. Coinbase said external clearing partners will continue to support its margin derivatives business and planned U.S. single-share perpetual contracts.
Earlier, a September 3 report detailed Coinbase's single-share perpetual contract application, including two SEC notices dated September 1 involving its exchange and brokerage entities respectively. In the companying announcement, Coinbase said: "We are working to bring single-share perpetual contracts to the United States."
According to the application report, Coinbase Derivatives filed Form 1-N for securities and futures exchange registration, while Coinbase Financial Markets filed Form BD-N for limited purpose securities and futures broker-dealer registration. The document did not specify a release date, backed stocks or proposed leverage limits.
