Prosecutors revealed that Spaleta laundered illegal gains through a complex chain of transactions and used the funds to purchase various collectibles. He used the coin mixer Tornado Cash to transfer funds and subsequently purchased the rare Magic card "Black Lotus" worth about $500,000, 18 unopened packs of Magic "Alpha Supplement Pack" worth about $1.5 million, and the first edition of the Pokémon basic set worth about $750,000.
Authorities seized Black Lotus cards and other items from Spaleta's residence. In addition, law enforcement seized approximately $31 million worth of cryptocurrency in February 2025, which prosecutors said originated from the Uranium exchange. Jamie McDonald, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, quoted Spaletta as saying: "Cryptocurrency is just fake Internet money after all." This shows his indifference towards the victims.
Case Background and Industry Warning
Spaletta, 36, who lives in Rock Mountain, Maryland, was sentenced to trial by U.S. District Judge Jed S. Rakoff after a six-day trial. A jury presided over by Rakoff unanimously found guilty on all counts. "As the Manhattan jury unanimously found, Jonathan Spalletta repeatedly used loopholes in the code of the decentralized cryptocurrency platform to steal tens of millions of dollars," prosecutor McDonald said.
The verdict was also officially announced through social media platform X. Although suspects in the recent NEAR Intentions attack have fully refunded US$3.8 million in losses, security threats in the cryptocurrency field remain serious. Data shows that losses caused by hacking attacks in September alone amounted to US$768 million. This case once again highlights that relying solely on security audits is not enough to comprehensively protect the security of users 'cryptographic assets.
