DFINITY successfully passes the first round of review of.icp domain names by ICANN
DFINITY's Internet Computer ($ICP) project has successfully passed the preliminary review stage set by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) for.icp generic top-level domains (gTLDs). This progress makes the application expected to be included in the global "sunrise registration" shortlist in 2026, marking a key step in the Internet Computer project's application competition to reshape the Domain Name System (DNS).
The time node is of great significance
ICANN released a complete list of the 2026 round of new gTLD applications on October 7, 2026, disclosing the string of applications and application subject information. This day is called the "Announcement Day" and the information released includes the main strings of all applications, a list of preliminary dispute sets, and the public portions of each application.
A total of 1,663 applications were received during this application submission period and the deadline is August 12, 2026. Passing the preliminary review is an early but significant step in the lengthy process. For any domain name to be officially launched, applicants must prove their technical capabilities and go through a multi-stage evaluation process.
After the "publication date", eligible applicants have two weeks to choose a replacement string. Subsequently, ICANN will announce the list of strings that will finally enter the project on the "String Confirmation Date" on November 17, 2026.
. Significance of icp for decentralized networks
The actual impact of.icp domain names goes far beyond brand display. If the application successfully advances to the delegation stage, the.icp extension will directly connect the traditional DNS root structure and Internet Computer's end-to-end decentralized smart contract infrastructure. From a practical perspective, browser traffic can be routed directly to smart contracts and decentralized applications running on the network, eliminating the need to rely on intermediate enterprise-level web hosting services or centralized domain name registration services.
The New gTLD Project is an initiative driven by the ICANN community to support the continued expansion of DNS, promote diversity, encourage competition, and enhance the usefulness of Internet addresses. For blockchain projects, obtaining native gTLD would represent a rare legal recognition within traditional Internet governance frameworks.
There is a long way to go
It is expected that the project will take at least two years to launch the first top-level domains. According to ICANN's forecast of the number of applications, the completion time of the entire project is expected to be around June 2030. Whether DFINITY can maintain its momentum through various stages, including evaluation, objection handling, and contract signing, will determine whether.icp will eventually enter the DNS root zone.
