Why was an ETF designed to short XRP delayed 19 times?

Teucrium postponed the effective date of the XRP short ETF for the 19th time, in sharp contrast to long products.

Teucrium has again postponed the effective date of its exchange-traded fund (ETF) designed to profit from falling XRP prices, the 19th extension for the product. The move created an unusual contrast in the U.S. market: Long-leveraged XRP-related products are currently being traded in the market.

The latest documents show that the effective date of the Teucrium 2 times daily reverse XRP ETF (i.e. short ETF) has been adjusted to October 11, 2026. The product is designed to provide a return that is approximately twice the reverse direction of XRP's daily performance. This means that if XRP falls by 1%, the ETF will theoretically earn about 2% per day before deducting fees and other tracking effects.

However, investors should not regard October 11 as a fixed listing trading day. The document only deals with when the registration statement will take effect, while the proposed public offering is expected to take place only "as soon as practicable."

Why are XRP short ETFs postponed repeatedly?

This is an obvious question, but the relevant filings (documents) do not give a clear answer. Securities and Exchange Commission records show that Teucrium repeatedly used Form 485BXT to specify a new effective date. For example, a July document stated that its "sole purpose" was to postpone entry into force, which was extended to August 16. Similar extensions will continue throughout 2026.

According to reports, since April 2025, this extension has brought the cumulative number of times to 19. Crucially, nothing in these extension notices indicates that the SEC rejected the ETF or ordered Teucrium to extend it, nor does it mention liquidity, regulatory concerns or insufficient investor demand as reasons. So unless Teucrium provides more information, the explanation of why the ETF has not yet been launched will only remain at the stage of speculation.

Long XRP funds are already trading

What is even more puzzling is the situation on the other side of the trading. Teucrium's 2x Daily Leverage Long XRP ETF (code: XXRP) is already in operation. Its prospectus stated that the fund seeks to achieve yields twice the daily price performance of XRP.

As of September 11, the product was still in active trading, closing at US$30.96, and trading volume was close to 796,000 shares. Its investment portfolio contains significant XRP futures exposure.

Teucrium does not seem to have plans to quietly cancel its short selling products. An investment advisory agreement signed on August 4 lists a 2 x daily leveraged long XRP ETF and a 2 x daily reverse XRP ETF, both with an advisory rate of 1.89%.

This leads to a peculiar situation: bullish leveraged products already exist, while their bearish counterpart continues to move deeper into the calendar.

XRP ETF demand adds another variable

This extension is particularly prominent at a time when XRP is increasingly becoming an important part of U.S. investment products. Although the XRP price itself is struggling in the $1.30 range, the U.S. spot XRP ETF has recently recorded continued inflows. Data showed that a net inflow of US$14.38 million was recorded on September 1, continuing the inflow momentum of 11 consecutive trading days; and in another trading session when risk aversion increased, XRP funds outperformed Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana ETF.

Institutional ownership is also growing, with them appearing on major disclosed lists of XRP ETF holders such as Goldman Sachs, Jane Street and Millennium Management.

Teucrium 2x Daily Reverse XRP ETF -2x daily XRP exposure (short) Not marketed-its registration effective date has been postponed many times. The SEC filing clearly specifies a new effective date for the fund.

Therefore, the next date to watch is October 11. But after 19 extensions, the more important question is not just when the fund will take effect, but whether Teucrium will eventually let investors trade the other side of XRP (i.e., short direction).
