Long-term Ethereum investors cashed out US$36.34 million, achieving an astonishing return of 8750 times
A long-term Ethereum (ETH) investor sold 13,320 ETH units on Coinbase, cashing in as much as US$36.34 million, achieving one of the most extraordinary profits in recent years, a move that attracted widespread attention. Blockchain data platform Arkham Intelligence tracked the transfer about seven hours before crypto analyst Ted (@TedPillows) disclosed the news on X/Twitter.
Income Size Analysis
It is reported that the investor bought Ethereum at a price of US$0.31 per piece, a price level last seen back in 2015. At the time of the trade, ETH was trading at approximately $2,727, which meant that the position received a staggering 8,750-fold return. It is worth noting that the wallet transferred 15,000 ETH (valued at approximately $30.97 million at the time) to Coinbase six months ago, accompanied by two smaller transfers, indicating a phased, large-scale exit strategy.
Based on the entry cost of US$0.31 per ETH, the seller achieved a return of nearly 8,750 times, converting the approximately US$4,150 principal originally used to purchase 13,400 ETH units into tens of millions of dollars in wealth. Some community commentators pointed out that in multiple transactions, the wallet's average realized price for approximately 170,000 tokens was US$1,137 each. This series of transactions appears to mark a near-liquidation liquidation of its initial coin offering (ICO) allocation.
Community Observation and Wallet Behavior
Analysts and on-chain investigators paid close attention to the technical details of the transaction. Observers pointed out that a "test" transfer of 10 ETH was sent to Coinbase shortly before the main transaction occurred, indicating that sellers were cautious in trying to verify the validity of the receiving address before mass transfers. In addition, four secondary addresses closely similar to the primary deposit address were used as bait, which may be a tactical means to enhance privacy protection.
After completing this major sale, the wallet still held 1,484 ETH, indicating that although the main position has been cleared, the seller still retains some exposure. This model is consistent with the behavioral characteristics of early adopters carefully managing exit strategies, designed to minimize impact on the market and protect privacy. The practice of using multiple practice transfers and disguising addresses has attracted the attention of blockchain analysts who track whale movements.
Belief in holding positions and timing to exit
Market participants commented that holding Ethereum in multiple bull-bear cycles requires extraordinary belief. According to one community member, the seller "bought for $0.31 and never sold through all fluctuations, like a time traveler." Even among early ICO participants, this patience was extremely rare.
Several voices in the encryption community also expressed their views on the timing of exit. One market participant emphasized that the sale coincided with ETH's first weekly close above $2,700 in nine months, believing it reflected rational market awareness. Ethereum's indicators of social sentiment have deteriorated significantly in recent months, which may prompt investors to opt out when the next major rally occurs.
