Ethereum is under pressure at US$2,800 resistance and is currently trading at around US$2,618
Ethereum is currently trading at around US$2,618, down 2.91% in the past 24 hours, with a total market value of nearly US$328.06 billion. Buyers are trying to defend the recent rebound, but the market is facing an important test as prices approach key resistance areas.
Key resistance limits Ethereum's upside
After a strong rebound from September lows, Ethereum entered a consolidation phase below its main resistance level, hovering around $2,620. Chart data shows that the area of dense resistance between $2,750 and $2,800 poses a considerable obstacle to bullish momentum.
analyst Ted pointed out that $2,800 remains the key level to confirm the continuation of the broader bullish trend. Ethereum recently recorded its strongest weekly K-line in eight months, indicating improved buyer interest, but a clear closing price above $2,800 must occur before a decisive breakthrough can be confirmed. Ethereum needs to achieve a decisive weekly close above $2,800 to verify further room for upside, otherwise prices could be limited by this significant resistance level.
If it can successfully exceed US$2,800, it will consolidate the long-term structure and target the US$3,000 region. Since then, the next major area of resistance appears around $3,447, and if bullish sentiment continues, the $3,400 to $3,500 range will become the focus of attention.
Short-term pullbacks and support areas
At the lower time frame, Ethereum is still in a broad four-hour consolidation state. Previous attempts to break US$2,700 were rejected near US$2,740 to US$2,780, creating uncertainty about the short-term direction. Some analysts suggest a deeper correction could occur before buyers regain control of the situation.
Cryptocurrency trader Crypto Tony pointed out that if ETH continues to fall, the $2,550 to $2,585 region will be the next important support level. Bulls may prefer to wait for a clear breakthrough or a retest of lower positions before seeking new long positions.
If prices fall back to the support level of $2,550 to $2,585 and buyers hold on to the area, ETH may try again to move towards $2,665 and eventually challenge the resistance level near $2,780. If it falls below $2,550, the bullish outlook will weaken.
Fundamental pressure: ETF outflows and validator exits
The market technical outlook is further complicated by fundamental warnings. U.S. spot Ethereum exchange-traded funds (ETFs) have experienced continuous net outflows, withdrawing US$50.76 million on October 5, and the total outflow in the past five trading days was approximately US$205.9 million. This represents the longest net divestment record since June 2026, highlighting the decline in institutional demand.
In terms of pledge, Ethereum's validator exit queue soared from approximately 200,000 ETH at the end of September to approximately 800,000 ETH on October 3. According to reports, the number of ETH waiting to be released increased by approximately 392% this month. While this does not guarantee an immediate sell-off, it will increase the risk of potential liquid supply if market conditions deteriorate.
Combining these factors, selling risks increase when ETH hovers below key resistance levels. If Ethereum can recover $2,800 from these challenges, Bolster will be bullish in the short term. Otherwise, the possibility of further retractions to the US$2,600 to US$2,550 support area remains.
Technical signal: Moving average becomes new resistance
On the four-hour chart, Ethereum fell below all key moving averages in one operation. The 50 EMA is now at US$2,689, the 75 EMA is at US$2,681, and the 100 EMA is at US$2,666, and prices are below this cluster for the first time in the current rally.
Previously, these levels served as reliable dynamic support. Now, they pose a technical obstacle to any rebound, with the 100 EMA ($2,666) being the primary obstacle, followed by the 75 EMA ($2,681) and the 50 EMA ($2,689). ETH must regain this area for short-term momentum to improve.
Although the moving average itself is positively ranked, a break below these three moving averages indicates that sellers have regained the upper hand in the short-term outlook. Until ETH recovers the EMA cluster, downward pressure is likely to continue and the risk of further decline increases.
Outlook and price targets
As long as prices hold on to near-term support, Ethereum's greater recovery trend remains in effect, but the market must clear key resistance levels to move higher. The $2,700 to $2,800 area is now the main hub that supporters need to turn into a stable foundation to achieve further gains.
Alex Marzell's analysis highlights the importance of Ethereum recovering $2,200 to the bottom of $2,300 before breaking through the upside. The next major liquidity area is at $3,400, which will be a long-term upside target if buyers stay strong above $2,800. However, losing current structural support would expose ETH to the risk of a deeper correction.
