Former BitMEX Chief Arthur Hayes: The AI data center boom will trigger a crash, which in turn triggers a bailout plan that benefits Bitcoin
Former BitMEX CEO Arthur Hayes predicts that the artificial intelligence (AI) data center boom bubble will eventually burst, and the resulting government bailout plan will benefit Bitcoin (BTC). He predicted that this process may have a test market at the end of 2027 or 2028.
Summary of Core Views
Hayes pointed out: The world is wasting trillions of dollars on artificial intelligence data centers.
Time Window: The time point when AI companies may face their huge computing power bills is late 2027 or 2028.
Market status: Bitcoin fell below the US$84,000 mark on Wednesday and is currently down about one-third from its all-time high.
Hayes's AI warning
Hayes, co-founder and chief investment officer of cryptocurrency investment firm Maelstrom, said that humans are wasting trillions of dollars on AI data center construction as technology companies compete for computing power. He made this point in a speech at the Gamma Prime Investment Conference in Singapore released on Wednesday.
He added that as construction progresses, computing power will eventually become cheap and abundant. According to Hayes, companies that drive computing power demand such as SpaceX, OpenAI and Anthropic are currently not profitable. Once the data centers under construction are completed, infrastructure providers will charge these companies for the committed capacity, and this "bill" may expire at the end of 2027 or 2028.
Bitcoin bailout bet
Hayes believes that every major technology promotion in financial history has been accompanied by over-construction, and that investors who plan for subsequent bailouts will benefit, just as they did after the 2008 financial crisis. "Crises will always occur, and rescues will surely come." he said.
He expects Bitcoin and other crypto assets to absorb excess liquidity released by the bailout. A study released in September by the Brookings Institution predicted that U.S. spending on AI infrastructure will reach $10.3 trillion between 2025 and 2032, revealing the scale of the funding involved.
Hayes also stated the opposite view: If AI becomes useful enough over the next 12 months, the demand will be enough to make AI companies profitable. He said he is not optimistic about shorting AI stocks, and his newly founded company Flop-an AI proxy payment project expected to launch in the first quarter of 2027-plans to create a spot market for cheap computing power that he expects.
Bitcoin Market Background
According to CoinGlass data, Bitcoin fell below US$84,000 from approximately US$85,500 in the early hours of Wednesday, and US$403.58 million in leveraged long positions were cleared within an hour. The currency is currently trading at about one-third below the all-time high of US$126,080 set on October 6, 2025. In addition, U.S. spot bitcoin funds posted a net outflow of $89.9 million on Monday.
Hayes has held similar views for months. In an article in early August, he described the AI boom as similar to the 2008 credit bubble and predicted that the government's response would bring Bitcoin to $1 million. At the time, he expected Bitcoin to trade between $60,000 and $70,000 in the near future, and might even drop to $50,000, well below Wednesday's level of nearly $84,000.
