Shiba Inu (SHIB)'s payment potential in Japan: New opportunities brought by the cooperation between Binance Pay and PayPay
As Binance Pay begins to connect PayPay merchants across Japan, Shiba Inu (SHIB)'s payment promotion is expected to gain new impetus. According to an announcement issued by PayPay, one of Japan's major mobile payment services, on September 30, starting from that date, Haiwaiwan payment users can use its services in PayPay affiliated stores through HIVEX, a payment interoperability framework. The coverage includes daily consumption such as food, accommodation and souvenirs.
Current integration status and future outlook
However, current integrations do not include SHIB as a supporting payment asset. Binance payments initially only supported payments using Tether's USDT, while participating merchants continued to settle in Japanese yen. Still, if payment networks add more assets, this development opens up potential paths for other cryptocurrencies backed by Binance payments.
It is worth noting that the launch in Japan has sparked speculation within the Shiba Inu community, and people have begun to discuss whether SHIB could eventually be used through similar payment arrangements. On Wednesday, SHIB community member "Kimi_to_Mickey" asked on Twitter whether cryptocurrency payments could become possible in Japan, highlighting the prospects of using SHIB in daily business. "It would be great to use SHIB to pay at a corner pharmacy." He wrote.
Extensive network base and potential of the tourism market
Binance Payments 'existing vast network gives this development great significance to cryptocurrencies seeking greater payment utility. PayPay said the partnership connects its merchant network with approximately 48 million Binance payment users from more than 100 countries and regions. PayPay has been widely used in retail stores, restaurants, vending machines, taxis and other services in Japan.
HIVEX also supports a variety of overseas payment services, particularly in the Asian market, allowing PayPay to expand its reach among international tourists without merchants completely overriding existing payment systems. In addition, Japan's huge tourism market adds another potential use case. According to data provided by PayPay, Japan received 3.1 million foreign tourists in August 2026.
SHIB's payment basis and market performance
It is worth noting that SHIB does not start from scratch in terms of cryptocurrency payments. Payment tracking platform Cryptwerk lists more than 2,200 online and physical retailers related to SHIB payments, including companies such as Newegg, eGifter and Kinguin. SHIB also has a huge wallet base. Source data shows that the number of SHIB holders is approximately 1.69 million, with thousands of new unique wallet addresses added in September alone.
That being said, this payment development follows SHIB's inclusion in the Japan Association of Virtual and Crypto Asset Exchanges (JVCEA)'s "Crypto Green List" along with Bitcoin, Ethereum and XRP. This recognition may add weight to future SHIB payment integrations in Japan by giving the token a higher status in Japan's regulated crypto market.
However, SHIB still has a huge circulating supply of approximately 589 trillion yuan, and its price is still more than 93% below its historical high. As of press time, SHIB was trading at US$0.000053, down 8.42% in the past 24 hours.
