EDX Markets will launch institutional-level spot trading and support Verified Bitcoin (vBTC)
On October 8, EDX Markets, an institutional-only digital asset trading platform supported by Wall Street trading firms and venture capital institutions, announced that it will launch Verified Bitcoin (vBTC) for institutions to conduct spot trading. Through its partnership with VerifiedX, EDX will also join the VerifiedX network as a verification node, expanding its role from a purely trading venue to the underlying infrastructure that secures the token. This move further deepens Wall Street's layout in the field of Bitcoin tokenization, allowing institutions to apply Bitcoin in areas such as transactions, lending and decentralized finance (DeFi) without losing ownership of underlying assets.
1:1 fully mortgaged programmable Bitcoin
vBTC is a tokenized form of Bitcoin built based on the VerifiedX two-layer protocol. Each vBTC token is fully mortgaged by native Bitcoin at a ratio of 1:1, and each token is embedded in a Taproot address and has a direct conversion path back to Bitcoin. VerifiedX positions vBTC as a self-custodial and non-synthetic asset designed to meet enterprise-level business process needs such as price discovery, cross-market arbitrage, treasury and balance sheet liquidity management, and lending. Unlike economic exposure that lacks a direct redemption path for underlying assets, the core of vBTC is to ensure continued ownership, use and redemption rights.
In addition, as a standard EVM representation, vBTC.b also provides the same redemption path in supported Ethereum-compatible environments.
EDX assumes the role of verification node
In addition to launching new assets, EDX Markets will also verify transactions and participate in governance on the VerifiedX network. This arrangement is designed to allow institutions to directly control the multi-signature environment that protects their bitcoin rather than relying on a public signature pool; at the same time, EDX's centralized clearing house mechanism reduces bilateral counterparty risk between institutional participants.
David Olsson, chief commercial officer at EDX Markets, said: "As institutional adoption of digital assets continues to increase, giving mature market participants greater flexibility in trading, capital movement and deployment is becoming increasingly important."
Impact on Institutional Investors
Jay Pollak, head of strategy at the VerifiedX Foundation, pointed out: "Bitcoin doesn't need more layers of financial abstraction. It needs infrastructure that allows the asset itself to play a greater role."
For asset allocators, this listing connects EDX's institutional-level market structure with the programmable Bitcoin infrastructure, retaining native ownership and a direct redemption path. EDX said more details on the availability of vBTC will be announced in the coming weeks and its products are currently only open to institutional investors in the United States and certain other jurisdictions.
