Analysts 'interpretation of capital allocation
Independent analyst Shanaka Anslem Perera pointed out that Strategy raised US$5.41 billion in the third quarter through new common stock offerings. According to Perera, the company's bitcoin holdings increased by 1,666 at the end of the quarter from the end of June.
Perera detailed in its monthly newsletter on Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies that Strategy's SEC filing showed that 9.5% of the newly raised funds were used to purchase Bitcoin. Other capital allocations include establishing U.S. dollar reserves, paying cash dividends and buying back preferred shares.
"The question for investors is what the financing leaves behind. For shareholders, the number of bitcoins per share is only part of the answer. Cash is equally important, while claims on debt and preferred stock rank ahead of common stock. Raising capital does not necessarily mean buying Bitcoin."
Perera believes that while raising capital can provide conditions for future Bitcoin purchases, most of the money is dedicated to strengthening the company's balance sheet and rewarding preferred shareholders.
