Bitcoin price drops below $82,000: U.S. inflation data exceeds expectations, causing market fluctuations.
After the opening of U.S. stock markets on Wednesday, the price of Bitcoin (BTC) fell below $82,000. This was due to the fact that the U.S. Consumer Price Index for September exceeded market expectations.
Key points:
- Due to the U.S. September CPI inflation rate reaching 3.7% (expected to be 3.6%), the price of Bitcoin on the Bitstamp platform dropped to $81,926.
- Rising fuel prices were the main factor behind this inflation increase, with a year-on-year increase of 9.1%.
- After the news was announced, U.S. bond yields soared, while gold prices dropped to $4,079 per ounce.
High inflation data led to declines in cryptocurrencies, gold, and stock market futures.

According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the year-on-year inflation rate in September was 3.7%, higher than the market’s average expectation of 3.6%. The rise in fuel prices, caused by Middle Eastern conflicts and oil supply crises, was particularly significant. “The gasoline price index increased by 9.1% in September, accounting for more than half of the total increase in all items during that month. Following an 2.1% increase in August, the energy index also rose by 5.2% this month,” according to official statements.

Nevertheless, overall inflation continues to rise. The core CPI, after excluding energy and food prices, increased by 2.6% year-on-year, which is higher than the expected 0.1% increase. Sonu Varghese, chief macro strategist at Carson Group, commented that these high figures were expected. “What’s surprising is that investors are still surprised by the widespread inflation data. We haven’t yet seen the full impact of the rising diesel prices and the AI boom,” he told CNBC. Latest data from the CME Group’s FedWatch Tool shows that market expectations regarding Federal Reserve policy have been adjusted due to this data. Currently, most traders expect the Fed to raise interest rates by 25 basis points at its next meeting on October 28th. The probability of this happening is 53.7%, compared to 22.1% for the previous day. Meanwhile, there is a 50% chance of another 25-basis-point rate hike in December. Source: CME Group. Theresa Sheehan, an economist at Econoday, said, “Considering the weak non-非农就业数据 in September’s employment report, it seems likely that the Fed will pause any rate adjustments at its upcoming meeting on October 27-28th, but there’s a clear trend towards raising rates again in December.” As reported by Cointelegraph earlier, the next crucial US inflation data—the September Producer Price Index (PPI)—will be released on Friday. Analysis: High CPI is “the worst scenario imaginable for the global bond market.”Affected by the CPI data, the price of gold dropped to a minimum of $4,079 per ounce. At the same time, the yield on U.S. government bonds surged significantly. Related: CryptoQuant’s three charts support the idea that Bitcoin is still in a “October bull market”
. The 10-year U.S. bond yield, which is highly sensitive to energy price fluctuations, reached 5.329%, just three basis points below its 24-year high. “This is the worst situation that the global bond market can tolerate. Before these data were released, there seemed to be a slowdown in bond sales worldwide. But now, the bond market has once again become hot again.” Economist Robin Brooks wrote in a blog post
