A Bitcoin whales just opened short positions worth up to $235 million. It’s worth noting that this mysterious account had previously made precise trades during market fluctuations, earning a net profit of over $200 million in just one transaction. Now, they are taking long positions again, sparking widespread discussion in the market: Does this mean that Bitcoin’s price will experience another period of significant volatility? Or are these whales simply trying to manipulate the market by creating artificial trends? As the price of BTC hovers around $100,000, investors are once again on tenterhooks—after all, in this market, every move made by whales could be the harbinger of a storm.

This Bitcoin whale, who owns assets worth $11 billion, has opened large-scale short positions again, indicating that some major investors are trying to hedge against further downside risks in the cryptocurrency market, especially amidst concerns about tariffs and ongoing government disruptions.

This Bitcoin whale—referred to in crypto slang as a “major investor”—has opened short positions worth $235 million with a leverage ratio of 10 times. This essentially means that he is betting on the decline in the price of the world’s first cryptocurrency.

This major investor opened short positions on Monday, when the trading price of BTC was $111,190. According to Hypurrscan blockchain data, he currently faces an unfulfilled loss of $2.6 million on these short positions. If the price of BTC exceeds $112,368, these positions will be forced to be closed.

This new short position was opened by the same whale just one week after he netted approximately $200 million from losses in the cryptocurrency market through similar leveraged short positions.

In trading, leverage refers to a strategy that allows investors to open positions with much larger amounts of capital than they actually possess, by “borrowing” additional funds. While leverage can amplify potential profits, it also increases risk exposure and could lead to total investment losses.

“A whale who made $200 million by going short when BTC dropped to $100,000 now has transferred $300 million to Hyperliquid and is again going short,” wrote the blockchain data platform Arkham in a tweet on Monday.

Over the past week, this whale also transferred $540 million in BTC to new wallets, including $220 million transferred to Coinbase’s exchange wallet.

This Bitcoin whale, who owns $11 billion, appeared two months ago and exchanged approximately $5 billion in BTC for Ethereum (ETH). In terms of total ETH holdings, he once surpassed the second-largest corporate wallet holder, Sharplink, according to Cointelegraph’s report on September 1st.

According to analyst and early Bitcoin adopter Willy Woo, the massive sell-off by this dormant Bitcoin whale was one of the main factors contributing to the decline in BTC prices in August.

After the recent collapse in the cryptocurrency market, which caused BTC prices to fall below the crucial level of $113,000, these new Bitcoin whales face an unmet loss of over $6.95 billion.

“The trading price of BTC is below its average cost of approximately $113,000 per unit, resulting in an unfulfilled loss of $6.95 billion. This represents the largest loss since October 2023,” wrote CryptoQuant, a cryptocurrency analysis platform, in a tweet on Tuesday. The company also noted that these whales hold approximately 45% of the market’s total value.

Although investor sentiment has declined, analysts believe that the BTC dropping to $104,000 per unit over four days is a healthy adjustment. This reduction in excess leverage allows market participants to take more conservative positions.

Meanwhile, the supply of short-term Bitcoin holders has increased, with “speculative capital” occupying a larger share of the market, according to Glassnode, a blockchain analysis company, in its report on Tuesday.
