FollowingIt is reported that Sony Bank is seeking to obtain a banking license in the United States. The bank is working together with Bastion to develop a stablecoin that will be launched in 2026. This stablecoin will be related to Sony’s growing Web3 division, BlockBloom. Sony Bank, a subsidiary of Sony Financial Group, is preparing to introduce a stablecoin that will enable payments within Sony’s ecosystem in the US.
According to a report by Nikkei News on Monday, Sony plans to launch a stablecoin pegged to the US dollar in 2026. This stablecoin is expected to be used for purchasing PlayStation games, subscription services, and anime content.
It is said that the target customers for this stablecoin are American consumers, who account for approximately 30% of Sony’s overseas sales. This stablecoin is expected to be used in conjunction with existing payment methods such as credit cards, thereby reducing fees paid to card companies.
In October last year, Sony Bank applied for a banking license in the US. The bank plans to establish a subsidiary focused on stablecoins and has established partnerships with Bastion, a US-based stablecoin issuer. Sony’s venture capital department also participated in Bastion’s financing, which was led by Coinbase Ventures and valued at $14.6 million.
Sony Bank has been actively engaging in the Web3 sector. While Sony Bank is promoting stablecoins in the US, it is also making efforts to enter the Web3 domain. In June, the bank established a dedicated Web3 subsidiary.
In a statement issued in May, Sony Bank stated, “Digital assets utilizing blockchain technology have been integrated into various services and business models.”
