Bitcoin Lightning network nodes face upgrade warnings. Lightning network capacity continues to decline. Core Lightning urges node operators to upgrade to upcoming security versions or take their nodes offline. Developers received multiple AI-generated vulnerability reports from different sources within 10 days. The team plans to release the signed binary file while keeping the source code level vulnerability details secret for 14 days. As of now, there have been no confirmed reports of financial losses or active attacks. Bitcoin Lightning network capacity has dropped from 5,891 BTC in December 2025 to 3,998 BTC, a drop of 32.1%. The latest stable public version of Core Lightning is v26.06.6, while v26.09 is scheduled to be released in September.
Bitcoin Lightning network nodes face upgrade warnings
Core Lightning developers warn node operators to upgrade to an upcoming security version or take their systems offline. This Bitcoin Lightning Network implementation received multiple AI-generated vulnerability reports from different sources within 10 days. The team has not disclosed specific flaws, but called the response "urgent."
Core Lightning plans to release signed binaries containing fixes while keeping source-code-level details confidential for 14 days. Developers say the delay will make it more difficult for attackers to study patches and build usable exploit code before most carriers update. The team initially expected to release a regular minor version update within a few days, but then changed plans and recommended that operators unable to upgrade restart their nodes offline. Older versions, including v26.04, will not be supported during the security response period.
Cashu developer Calle called the issue "critical" and urged operators to shut down Core Lightning nodes. Core Lightning developer Christian Decker said the team will delay releasing the source code patch by two weeks while delivering signed binaries to users. Calle also questioned why the first warning was spread through Discord screenshots rather than the official Core Lightning account. The project subsequently issued a public notice. Developers reported that there were currently no confirmed financial losses or proactive attacks.
Lightning network capacity continues to decline
This warning comes as Bitcoin Lightning network capacity continues to decline. Data showed that the open channel capacity on Wednesday was 3,998 BTC, which was approximately US$313.5 million at current prices. On December 27, 2025, the capacity is 5,891 BTC. This means that in eight months, the network lost 1,893 BTC, or approximately 32.1%. Opening and closing the lightning channel still requires settlement on the Bitcoin blockchain.
Core Lightning said that several recent vulnerability reports used AI tools. The team is preparing the signed binary file and expects to provide the fix in approximately 48 hours and fully disclose the details of the vulnerability after a two-week confidentiality period. The warning follows problems with Lightning Network, Liquid and on-chain swap service Boltz. Boltz disabled swap services on August 3 after months of AI-assisted attacks, and the outage also affected some associated services. The latest stable public version of Core Lightning is v26.06.6, and the team plans to release v26.09 in September. Operators are still on high alert.
