Core Summary
The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) tested XRPL with a prototype system that enables institutions to verify official datasets without releasing sensitive information by anchoring encrypted fingerprints. Garlinghouse emphasized XRPL's low fees, fast billing and verified operating records, while BIS's testing provided efficient data release and verified performance results. The researchers defined the system as a "blockchain-agnostic" architecture that supports regulatory reporting and other applications, but did not confirm that BIS has adopted XRP Ledger.
The BIS experiment is seen as a recognition of XRP Ledger's institutional data verification capabilities
Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse believes that the BIS experiment is a verification of XRP Ledger's institutional data verification capabilities. The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) has created a prototype system designed to protect the authenticity of official statistical information and tested XRPL in the process.
According to Garlinghouse, XRPL's low rates, fast settlement speeds and verified operating records made it no surprise that the network was selected. His response directly connects BIS research to XRPL's ability to support highly demanding systems that require reliable and efficient infrastructure.
Researchers explored how institutions can verify published statistics without having to directly upload complete datasets or confidential information. Instead, the system converts each data set into a unique encrypted fingerprint and records the corresponding proof through the ledger.
BIS researchers applied the system to Statistical Data and Metadata Exchange (SDMX), a standard format for distributing structured official data. They processed each data set using the SHA3-512 hash algorithm and then combined individual records through a specialized Merkel tree structure. This process generates a unified root node that allows multiple records to be verified without requiring multiple separate blockchain transactions.
BIS research highlights the performance advantages of XRPL
BIS paper points out that low nominal costs and fast consensus finalization are one of the main reasons why researchers choose XRP Ledger. Under controlled testing conditions, the prototype's intermediate release time was between three and five seconds.
At the same time, the verification process takes only one to two seconds, providing efficient authenticity check support for users and automated systems. The framework also uses verifiable credentials that connect each statistical fingerprint to its recognized issuer identity.
Wider application goes beyond statistics
However, this experiment did not confirm that BIS has fully adopted XRPL in its broader operational or financial infrastructure. The researchers described the system as a proof of concept and emphasized that the framework remains compatible with other blockchains.
Still, Garlinghouse believes the selection of XRPL is a meaningful recognition of the institutional application capabilities Ripple has promoted over the years. His response focused on technical performance rather than the market price of XRP, placing the study in a broader context of credibility verification. In the final analysis, BIS's experiments established a documented role for XRPL in testing secure and independently verifiable official statistical information.
