The process of gradually reducing the duration

Solana began reducing the target slot time from August 21. At that time, the network dropped from 400 milliseconds to 350 milliseconds; on August 28, it dropped further to 300 milliseconds; on September 18, it reached 250 milliseconds. The latest phase will complete the planned sequence, further shortening the time it takes for each validator to produce blocks.

"Slot" refers to the short period of time during which a designated verifier can process transactions and propose blocks. Shorter time slots mean wallets, exchanges, and decentralized applications (DApps) can receive new transaction information more frequently.

The Solana Foundation's upgrade document describes this reduction as reducing latency and limiting the amount of time a single verifier can control block production. Under existing arrangements, the verifier produces blocks in four consecutive time slots. With a configuration of 400 milliseconds per slot, each validator previously had a 1.6-second window to sort transactions. Once the 200-millisecond target takes effect, the same four-slot window will be shortened to just 800 milliseconds.

A shorter production window may limit the time a validator can delay trading or take advantage of price differences between Solana and other trading venues. Although the frequency of block arrival is expected to increase, the computational effort contained in each block will be proportionately reduced. The adjustment aims to keep theoretical processing capabilities roughly unchanged.

In a 250-millisecond configuration, a block can carry up to 37.5 million units of account. In the final configuration, this limit was reduced to 30 million units of account. Previous reports have pointed out that phased deployments include security measures to prevent further slot reductions if the skipped block rate exceeds an allowable threshold.

Faster blocks pose new challenges for verifiers

Shorter slot durations require verifiers to run on a more compact schedule, especially those who submit votes in every available slot. Under the original 400-millisecond configuration, the network target was 2.5 slots per second. With the 200-millisecond configuration, this goal rises to 5 per second. As a result, verifiers who vote every time slot need to submit votes twice as often, which may increase operating costs and put more strain on network connections.

Transaction processing is also a factor to consider for wallets and applications. Solana transactions contain a recent blockchain hash, which helps prevent processed transactions from being played repeatedly. Block hashes are valid for a limited number of recent blocks. As the network generates time slots more frequently, the real-time available time to submit transactions using specific block-specific hashes becomes shorter. Transactions that require manual authorization, multi-signature or offline approval may face more tight deadlines.

Actual network performance will depend on how validators respond to faster schedules. Solana Compass data shows that during the previous 250-millisecond target period, the average slot duration was approximately 266 to 269 milliseconds. Differences between configuration goals and actual performance suggest that the network is not consistently achieving the expected slot duration.

Alpenglow upgrade is a stand-alone development project

While Solana's latest slot reduction is underway, developers are also preparing for another network change that focuses on final certainty of transactions. The Alpenglow consensus upgrade has arrived at Solana's Developer and Test Network, where developers are evaluating a system that aims to shorten the final certainty time from approximately 12.8 seconds to approximately 150 milliseconds.

Unlike SIMD-0525, which changes the frequency of block production, Alpenglow changes the way verifiers reach block finalization. The proposed consensus system replaces Tower BFT with Votor, a voting mechanism designed to finalize blocks through one or two rounds of direct verifier communications.

Solana's existing main network is still using Tower BFT, and the foundation has not confirmed the exact activation date for Alpenglow. In September this year, developers prepared Agave 4.3 for consensus testing, while slot reduction was performed under a separate activation schedule. These two upgrades address different parts of transaction processing. Faster slot goals do not mean that transactions will achieve final certainty in 200 milliseconds.

SOL price indicator is mixed before upgrade

On Friday, Solana's native token trading price was approximately US$110.30, down approximately 1.96% from the previous trading day and 7.16% from seven days ago. Despite planned network upgrades, technical indicators showed a mixed momentum for Solana, showing eight bullish signals, eight bearish signals and six neutral readings.

The 14-day Relative Strength Index (RSI) is near 44, below the neutral median of 50, but above the common oversold threshold of 30. The moving average presents a divided picture. SOL is trading below its 20-day exponential moving average (approximately $115.14), but remains above the 50-day EMA (approximately $107.31) and the 200-day EMA (approximately $97.07). Although the tokens are still above the long-term moving average, these readings indicate weak short-term momentum.

Immediate resistance is around $113.99, followed by another level around $119.82. On the downside, indicators identified support around $97.94. A sustained break above the first resistance level will bring the next level into focus, while a break below the support level could expose SOL to further sell-off risk.

Institutional demand is another factor in SOL's recent market performance. Price analysis for October noted that the US Solana exchange-traded fund (ETF) attracted about $800,000 in inflows the previous week, compared with $188.1 million the previous week. The slower inflows follow a period of strong institutional buying, with the Bitwise Solana Staking ETF having surpassed $1 billion in assets in August.

与此同时,Solana的200毫秒配置已完成在其测试网络上的部署。开发人员已将主网部署条件设定为网络状况,包括验证者跳过区块率,激活时间安排在第1053个纪元边界。
