Nigeria Communications Commission launches unregistered mobile phone outage warning
The Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) has begun sending warnings to Nigeria people with unregistered mobile phones informing them that their unapproved smartphones will be disconnected from their local cellular networks within 30 days. The committee began sending text message notifications on Saturday morning with "NCC-Checker" as the sender ID.
The text message content shows: "Your (device model) has not been verified on the Nigeria mobile network. You have 30 cumulative days before you disconnect the Internet. Please contact your seller or call 315."
The latest instructions from the NCC Device Management System (DMS) Enforcement Framework require that all SIM-enabled devices operating in all telecommunications networks, including smartphones, tablets, POS terminals and routers, must be registered and verified.
Users need to ensure IMEI compliance
Nigeria users who receive such messages are advised to contact their supplier or authorized retailer to ensure that their mobile phone's International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) has been properly cleared and registered in the NCC.
Previously, the NCC launched this process in September. The solution is implemented through a technology-driven initiative and aims to ensure that communications equipment imported, sold and used in Nigeria meets applicable technical and regulatory standards. The policy is mainly aimed at clearing up counterfeit, inferior or illegally smuggled mobile phones on the market that do not meet official safety and quality standards.
In addition, the importance of the move is that the NCC wants to track the unique IMEI number of every SIM-enabled device imported or sold in Nigeria, so that it can be traced when these devices are used for fraudulent activities. To achieve this goal, the NCC plans to deploy an automated Central Device Identity Registration (CEIR) system for tracking.
How to check the status of mobile phones
Although the NCC is committed to ensuring that imported devices meet the safety and quality standards it has set, people in Nigeria still need to check the status of their mobile phones and ensure that they meet the compliance requirements of the device management system.
To check if your mobile phone is approved for use in Nigeria, dial *315# and follow the prompts to find information about your mobile phone or other device.
- If the phone is approved: A prompt will pop up on the screen: "The device has been approved for NCC type and has been verified for use on the Nigeria mobile network."
- If the phone is not approved: You have 30 days, after which time you may be prevented from accessing the Nigeria mobile network.
The latest developments indicate that the NCC has begun to implement procedures to block unregistered mobile phones from the market. Therefore, it is recommended that users who purchase a new mobile phone or used mobile device test and verify their registration status before completing the transaction.
Action Guidelines for Mobile Device Suppliers
