Trump's August trading records show that technology stocks are active and cryptocurrency positions have limited movement
Despite frequent actions in the technology field, U.S. President Donald Trump's manipulation of cryptocurrency-related stocks in August was relatively restrained. A new financial disclosure document lists 517 transactions he made during the month. Data shows that Trump bought shares in some technology giants such as Meta, and also sold shares in Coinbase and several chip and network security companies.
Details of these transactions are reported via Form 278-T filed with the U.S. Office of Government Ethics (OGE). The form requires federal officials to list purchases and sales of stocks worth more than $1,000. To provide background reference, only value ranges are provided in the document, not the exact amounts.
Minor developments in the crypto space
Trump's cryptocurrency-related activities were mainly concentrated on two transactions on August 10.
- Buy Strategy: He bought a stake in a software company formerly known as MicroStrategy, which uses Bitcoin as its main treasury asset. Purchase amounts range from $1,001 to $15,000.
- Sell Coinbase: He sold shares of Coinbase, the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the United States, for the same amount between US$1,001 and US$15,000.
It is worth noting that this declaration did not show that he purchased a Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) or directly held cryptocurrency. Compared with the huge technology stock transactions in August, these crypto-related transactions are relatively minor.
Technology stock trading is dominated by Meta
The largest technology transaction in the filing document occurred on August 21 and involved a large purchase of Meta (the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp) with a value between US$5,000,001 and US$25,000,000. In addition, Meta also experienced three small purchases and one small sale on August 10 (worth US$1,001 to US$15,000).
Trump has also traded in other large technology stocks, and the following are the most prominent trading actions by companies:
- Microsoft: The largest purchase occurred on August 10, with amounts ranging from $1,000,001 to $5,000,000; there was also a small sale.
- Nvidia: The largest purchase occurred on August 17, with an amount of US$500,001 to US$1,000,000; a sale of the same amount was also made on August 21.
- Amazon: The largest purchase occurred on August 17, with an amount of US$250,001 to US$500,000; no sales were recorded that month.
- Alphabet: There were two purchases on August 17, each with an amount between US$100,001 and US$250,000; there was also a small sale.
- Palantir: The largest purchase occurred on August 17, with an amount of US$50,001 to US$100,000; no sales were recorded that month.
In addition, the filing documents also show that Trump purchased SpaceX bonds worth US$1,000,001 to US$5,000,000 on August 18, with an interest rate of 5.35%, with a maturity date of July 2031. This suggests he was providing a loan to SpaceX rather than buying a stake in the company.
The chip sector suffered widespread sell-off
Filing documents showed that semiconductor and technology stocks traded frequently in August. There were multiple large sales on August 21, followed by small transactions involving Broadcom, Nvidia and Dell Technologies later this month.
- Broadcom: Sold between US$500,001 and US$1,000,000 on August 21, with small trading at the end of the month.
- Dell Technologies: Sold US$500,001 to US$1,000,000 on August 21, and another US$15,001 to US$50,000 on August 28; no purchases were recorded that month.
Disclosure of post-transaction stock price performance
Since the trading date in the filing, both Meta and Strategy's shares have risen significantly, with Microsoft's gain smaller. The two stocks Trump sold, Nvidia and Coinbase, have also rebounded since then.
- Meta: rose 30.7% to US$718.73 from US$549.90 on August 21, its largest buying day.
- Microsoft: rose 3.1% to $521.95, from $506.06 on August 10, its biggest buying day.
- Strategy: rose to US$150.20 from US$97.33 on August 10 (its buying day), an increase of 54.3%.
- Nvidia: It rose from $214.72 on August 21, its large selling day, to $230.13, an increase of 7.2%. (Note: Trump also bought Nvidia in August)
- Coinbase: rose from $148.68 on August 10, the day it sold, to $174.67, an increase of 17.5%.
Trump's stance on cryptocurrencies and artificial intelligence
These August deals accompanied Trump's public embrace of the cryptocurrency industry. On August 19, he called on Congress to pass a "fair version" of the CLARITY Act, which aims to establish clearer rules for digital assets. The remarks were made at an event at the White House that included cryptocurrency executives such as Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong and Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev.
Trump also sees artificial intelligence and the broader field of technology as a priority for his administration. On September 29, he signed an executive order directing federal agencies to use the word "Super Intelligence" in official communications instead of "Artificial Intelligence" or "AI," a new term he believes better reflects the capabilities of today's technology. On October 8, he reiterated this position in a post on Truth Social, saying that anyone who uses "artificial intelligence" rather than "super intelligence" is an "enemy!"
Trump's cryptocurrency revenue is still huge
Trump's above-mentioned tiny crypto deals are only a small part of the big picture. His biggest cryptocurrency gains come from businesses related to his family's business. According to 2025 annual financial disclosure data reported by Reuters in July this year, Trump's revenue from the cryptocurrency business exceeded $1.4 billion.
Most of this revenue comes from World Liberty Financial, a cryptocurrency company co-founded by Trump and his son, and sales of Trump's meme coin. The filings show that revenue related to World Liberty Financial was nearly $800 million, including more than $520 million from token sales and more than $250 million from the sale of business interests. In addition, Trump also reported $635 million in revenue from the sale of his memes.
