Ethereum test network block limit increased to more than 3 times the current capacity

Ethereum Sepolia test network activates Glamstam upgrade, with block gas limit approaching 200 million.

On October 6, Ethereum's Sepolia test network officially activated the "Glamstam" upgrade and began to generate blocks with a gas limit approaching 200 million. This number is more than three times the current allowable limit for the Ethereum main network (60 million). Gas is a unit of measuring the amount of computing work on Ethereum, while the gas cap limits the amount of work a single block can accommodate.

According to code commit records associated with the 353, 024th epoch, this cap of 200 million is set to take effect at a 6.4-minute time mark on the Ethereum calendar, which starts at 13:53:36 UTC.

However, the actual blocks used only take up very little space. A snapshot of 25 consecutive blocks taken from Etherscan on October 8 showed that the block numbers ranged from 11,872,013 to 11,872,037, and their gas usage was approximately 24% to 43% of the upper limit.

A higher cap does not mean that the number of transactions will directly triple, it just means that blocks can accommodate more data when demand arises. For ordinary users, this redundant space helps prevent fees from soaring when the network is congested. Because congestion feels like strangers competing to bid to get into the next block.

Verifier Pressure and Progressive Adjustment

Larger blocks pose greater challenges for verifiers. Verifier is the computer node that pledges ETH as collateral to inspect and confirm each block. Researchers at the Ethereum Foundation have warned that a limit of more than 40 million may prevent blocks from spreading as expected in the network, so the gas limit has been gradually increased in a step-by-step strategy.

One of the adjustments occurred in February 2025, raising the cap from 30 million to 32 million with a 52% vs. 48% vote of validators. Subsequently, in 2025, the cap was raised to 60 million, twice the original 30 million. The Fusaka upgrade that comes online on December 3, 2025 sets this value to the default value.

Two key changes on the roadmap

There are two changes on the Ethereum roadmap that are designed to help the network handle greater loads:

  • Block-level access lists: Records the accounts and data touched by each block, allowing computers to check multiple transactions at once, rather than processing them one by one.
  • Enshrined proposer-builder separation: Move the auction mechanism that determines who assembles each block from the external middleware it currently relies on to Ethereum's own rules.
