Starlink officially launches satellite Internet service in United Arab Emirates

Starlink has officially launched its satellite Internet service in United Arab Emirates, a few days after the company received a ten-year operating license from the country's telecommunications regulator. The satellite Internet operator announced on its official X account on Thursday, September 3, that its high-speed, low-latency Internet service now covers United Arab Emirates.

"Starlink's high-speed and low-latency Internet is now available in United Arab Emirates!" The company wrote.

This announcement confirms the commercial availability of the service. Previously, the United Arab Emirates Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) issued a ten-year general space services license to Star Link Satellite Communications Co., Ltd. on August 28. The license authorizes the company to establish, operate and manage a public satellite communications network within the country and provide broadband satellite Internet services.

Starlink's new satellite connection options

This approval does not only cover individual residential users. Under the license, Star Chain can provide services to companies, government agencies and the maritime and aviation sectors. According to TDRA, the service will add a layer of ground to the digital infrastructure of the United Arab Emirates. It is expected to complement existing terrestrial optical fiber and 5G networks rather than replace them.

Regulators said the addition of satellite connections will diversify Internet access options and improve the resilience, readiness and continuity of the country's communications network under different conditions. This is particularly important for industries that require connectivity beyond traditional fixed and mobile infrastructure, including maritime transportation, aviation, energy, logistics and Incident Response Service. TDRA also said the license will support connectivity solutions in key industries and regions that require additional Internet access options, while enhancing the country's ability to respond to emergencies and crises.

Starlink's regulatory license in United Arab Emirates

This ten-year approval is an important regulatory step for the satellite Internet provider in United Arab Emirates, where telecommunications services operate under a strictly regulated framework. TDRA said the license was granted in accordance with the country's approved regulatory and technical framework, including requirements related to security, information infrastructure protection, service quality, reliability, continuity, consumer rights and data privacy. The regulator added that the satellite chain must also comply with spectrum use regulations and technical coordination requirements from relevant authorities.

TDRA Director Majid Sultan Al Mesmar said the approval reflected the United Arab Emirates's efforts to maintain a regulatory environment that supports innovation and investment while adopting advanced technology. He said the introduction of advanced satellite internet services would expand connectivity options, enhance network resilience and business continuity, and support United Arab Emirates ambitions in the telecommunications and digital economy. The launch means that StarLink can now commercially provide its low-Earth-orbit satellite Internet services to users in one of the Middle East's major digital and telecommunications markets.

The addition of Star Link has also added a new level to the United Arab Emirates's connectivity infrastructure as the country continues to invest in optical fiber, 5G and other emerging communications technologies. The full impact of StarChain's launch will depend on adoption of the service by consumers, businesses and key industries covered by the new license.
