Democratic senators questioned the Republican Party's final plan for major cryptocurrency market structure legislation and filed a counterproposal hours before the key vote. Democrats believe the current version will prevent state attorneys general from filing a case directly with the president; at the same time, they oppose provisions that allow the Office of Government Ethics to approve senior officials to retain their cryptocurrency business relationships.
Senator Loomis: We have no room for more concessions
Republicans had previously called the latest draft, released on Sunday, its "last, best and final offer." Loomis pointed out that she has made 114 separate policy compromises to Democrats during discussions. She sees giving up legal protection for decentralized finance (DeFi) developers as a major personal sacrifice. Tuesday's vote is crucial and 60 votes are needed to move forward.
White House cryptocurrency adviser Patrick Vitter said at an event in Washington on Monday that Republicans have tried their best to respond to Democratic concerns. "If there are any changes, what's being discussed is just punctuation," Witt pointed out. He admitted that the final decision lies in the hands of senators, not the White House.
