Bitcoin is in jeopardy at its key support level of US$82,500, and oil prices soar amid concerns about U.S. -Iran military action.

After Wall Street opened on Thursday, oil prices rose as market concerns about U.S. and Iran military action intensified, and Bitcoin (BTC) faced the risk of losing its key support level of US$82,500.

Core Points:

  • Affected by new concerns about U.S. -Iran military action, Bitcoin fell back to US$81,000 for the first time, the lowest level since September 21.
  • U.S. 30-year Treasury yields hit a multi-decade high, and senior Federal Reserve officials said further interest rates could be raised.
  • Bitcoin price movements increasingly show the possibility of losing the important support level of US$82,500.

NBC News quoted Pentagon officials and people familiar with the matter as reporting that the United States may be preparing to launch a new round of military strikes against Iran. This led to higher oil prices on the day, with WTI crude reaching US$93.20 a barrel, the highest price since October 2; Brent crude reaching US$105.88.

U.S. President Donald Trump told supporters at a rally in San Antonio, Texas that Middle East envoy Steve Vitkov has made progress in negotiating a peace deal with Iran, but admitted he has little personal interest in diplomatic outcomes. "I don't think reaching a deal is what I really want, but they are willing to offer anything to stop the conflict," he told The Independent, expecting the conflict to end in the "very near future."

U.S. bond yields hit a 24-year high, and Federal Reserve officials hint that they will raise interest rates further.

The U.S. 30-year bond yield hit a 24-year high of 5.73% that day and then fell to 5.65%.

Comments from Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller put pressure on yields, arguing that further interest rates are needed to curb inflation. "If economic data continues to be released as expected, I expect additional rate hikes to be taken to support a more timely return of inflation to the 2% target. However, there is some flexibility as to when these rate hikes will be implemented,"he said in a speech at the Central Bank of Turkey Forum in Istanbul. "Interest rates do not need to be carried out in consecutive meetings, but they should be in place within an acceptable period of time."
