The Zcash Foundation released an engineering progress update: Zebra 7.0.0-rc.0 test network is activated, and the NU7 upgrade is approaching.
The Zcash Foundation released a detailed engineering progress report covering the developments of the Zcash network from September 21 to October 5, 2024. During this period, the organization released four new versions of the Zebra full-node client, including the first Release Candidate for version 7.0.0.
Zebra Release and Technology Upgrade
Zebra is the official independent full-node implementation of Zcash Network. Built entirely from scratch using the Rust programming language and maintained by the Zcash Foundation, the project is committed to supporting privacy-focused technological advances and decentralized infrastructure to drive the development of the Zcash ecosystem.
Three consecutive minor versions have been released recently: Zebra 6.4.0, 6.4.1 and 6.4.2. Among them, Zebra 6.4.0 introduces a number of improvements, including an experimental gRPC server compatible with lightwalletd, reduced traditional transaction fees that comply with the ZIP-317 standard, accelerated delivery of block templates to miners, and preparations for the upcoming network upgrade (NU7). Zebra 6.4.1, released on the same day, solves possible synchronization stagnation problems near the top of the blockchain.
Subsequently, the team deployed Zebra 6.4.2 to address a critical vulnerability. This version fixes a crash caused by malformed transactions from arbitrary peers. The flaw was discovered by OSS-Fuzz, a continuous fuzz testing service provided by Google, which is designed to help identify security issues in open source projects.
Noun explanation: OSS-Fuzz is a Google service that helps developers discover errors and security vulnerabilities by automatically testing open source software using accidental or random input.
NU7 Test Network Activation and Mainnet Preparation
The highlight of this phase of engineering work is the release of Zebra 7.0.0-rc.0, the first release candidate for the upcoming 7th Generation Network Upgrade 7 (NU7). This version went online on October 4 in Block 4,465,026 of Zcash Testnet, providing developers and the community with the opportunity to test functionality before the main network launches.
Zebra 7.0.0-rc.0 enables NU7 on the public test network, showing a preview of upcoming changes and providing critical preparation time for subsequent mainnetwork deployments.
plans to launch another software update that supports NU7 before November 2 (i.e., before the older 6.4.x series is planned to retire/cease operation). Main-network operators are recommended to upgrade to the upcoming version to ensure a smooth transition and maintain continued compatibility. The tentative date for NU7's main network activation is November 5, 2026.
Market dynamics and whale activity
In terms of market performance, Zcash has risen 2.93% to US$1,376 in the past 24 hours. However, prices are still below the peak of $1,696 set on September 26. Despite the correction, large investors continue to accumulate the asset.
According to data collected by analytics platform Lookonchain, a newly created wallet recently extracted 7,166 ZECs from Coinbase, indicating active participation from "giant whales"(large holders) during periods of price fluctuations.
Although prices have recently retreated from their highs in late September, the accumulation of $ZEC by large holders remains strong, as confirmed by recent large withdrawals from exchanges.
