The Winklevoss brothers are betting on privacy coins and applying to launch a Zcash spot ETF
Cameron Winklevoss and Tyler Winklevoss are betting on privacy coins. They filed documents with regulators to apply to launch spot exchange-traded funds (ETFs) with Zcash (ZEC) as the target. This once-neglected asset is undergoing a dramatic recovery.
Fund structure and operating mechanism
According to the S-1 registration statement filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on Monday, the "Winklevoss Zcash ETF" will directly hold ZEC tokens and is designed to track their price movements. Through traditional brokerage accounts, investors can participate in the fund's investments without having to purchase and store tokens themselves. The fund plans to be listed on the NASDAQ Stock Exchange in the United States with the ticker symbol "WINK" and a management fee ratio of 0.25%.
Gemini, the cryptocurrency exchange owned by the Winkleworth brothers, will serve as a custodian, securely keeping the ZECs held in trust in the form of cold wallets. Winklevoss Capital Fund expressed its intention to purchase shares worth up to $100 million in the offering, but the statement noted that this was a non-binding commitment.
In addition, the trust fund also hired Cypherpunk Technologies, supported by Winkleworth and focused on Zcash treasury management, as a "Zcash ecosystem partner" to provide advice on agreement-related matters and voting guidance for currency holders.
Zcash's market revival background
The filing comes amid a significant rebound in Zcash. As a privacy coin, Zcash allows users to use an encryption technology called zk-SNARKs to hide the sender, recipient and amount information of a transaction.
After years of marginalization by regulators, ZEC has jumped to the forefront of digital assets this year due to increased public concerns about financial surveillance and institutional investors launching related product packaging. Cryptocurrency asset manager Grayscale converted its Zcash trust into a spot ETF in August and subsequently split its shares; while 21Shares launched Europe's first Zcash exchange-traded product.
If "WINK" is successfully launched, the two most well-known twins in the industry will add important strength to this trend.
Risk Warning and Future Outlook
The statement does not avoid risks and clearly points out the extremely high volatility of ZEC and the unique vulnerability of privacy coins. The document specifically mentions that a sound bug was discovered in Zcash's Orchard shield pool this year, causing ZEC prices to briefly drop by about 50%, until the network fixed the problem through an "Ironwood" upgrade.
This filing is only the first step and the SEC still needs approval before trading can begin. Similar to all spot cryptocurrency ETFs, the fund will track highly volatile assets, which means investors could face huge profit and loss risks from the token that has risen more than 2,000% in the past year.
