Technical mechanisms for the privacy system
A research team led by Clara Shikheman has released a new technology that enables confidential transactions without modifying the Bitcoin network consensus protocol. This method combines a hybrid mechanism similar to Tornado Cash with zero-knowledge cryptography to hide the two parties and the amount of the transaction.
Starknet founder Eli Ben-Sasson expressed support for the concept and linked it to the basic Zerocash research that ultimately spawned Zcash. However, well-known researcher Robin Linus warned that its underlying cryptographic methods have not yet been verified and lack established security guarantees. Other critics have pointed out that the system may have potential vulnerabilities for quantum computing attacks.
Technical details of privacy plan
Under the proposal, users will deposit bitcoins into encrypted "bills." These notes can then be transferred within the system via zero-knowledge proof, preventing transaction details from being publicly visible on the blockchain. During the extraction phase, users will receive Bitcoin transferred to a new address. This effectively cuts off the observable connection between the original wallet and the final receiving address.
Hickman emphasized that the design requires no soft forks, no bridging mechanisms, and no reliance on external operators. She pointed out that the research team invested a lot of energy in analyzing metadata that the system may leak under privacy protection. She also admitted that the current version is only a preliminary result and a lot of additional development work is planned in the future.
The necessity for blockchain privacy
Blockchains such as Bitcoin serve as transparent public ledgers, meaning that anyone can check wallet addresses, view balances and track their complete transaction history. This limitation of transparency has historically prompted some users to turn to alternatives (such as Zcash) that provide blocked transactions. The need for privacy does not necessarily imply malicious intent.
Even daily transactions such as purchasing groceries are carried out on a transparent chain can inadvertently expose a user's entire financial asset portfolio. Advocates of enhanced privacy systems argue that this creates unnecessary personal security risks. In recent years, the frequency of violent crimes and kidnappings against cryptocurrency holders has increased, with many cases benefiting from information obtained from public blockchain data.
Proponents of the privacy proposal believe that implementing such features could significantly reduce the risks faced by ordinary Bitcoin users. However, the study has not been universally recognized. Respected researcher Robin Linus emphasized that the cryptographic basis behind the method is still experimental in nature. Linus pointed out that the security model supporting the system lacked rigorous testing and formal verification. Although he did not completely deny the concept, he advocated careful review before considering its use in a production environment.
In addition, critics have pointed to potential weaknesses in future advances in quantum computing, a widespread concern that affects many existing cryptographic protocols. Still, the proposal rekindled important discussions about enhancing privacy on the Bitcoin network. Its ultimate adoption will depend on extensive testing and peer review by the broader Bitcoin research ecosystem.
