HashSmash: Opening a new era of open confrontation between AI and cryptography

On the Yukon platform, anyone can point an AI agent to hash algorithms such as SHA-256, SHA-3, BLAKE3, and Poseidon, and all results will be publicly released and reviewed by cryptographers. The open competition in Yukon aims to test the extent to which AI can advance attacks on the hash functions that underpin the core technology of Internet encryption.

Facing AI's challenge to the basics of mathematics

Eigen Labs and Shielded Labs, a leading Zcash organization, today jointly launched the HashSmash Open Competition. The competition will test whether AI agents can achieve breakthroughs in four widely used hash functions: SHA-256, SHA-3, BLAKE3 and Poseidon. Currently, AI systems have discovered thousands of previously unknown vulnerabilities in widely used software such as operating systems and Web browsers, but these vulnerabilities mainly exist at the code level. However, whether AI can find weaknesses in the mathematical foundation of cryptography itself remains an unsolved mystery. The original intention of HashSmash was to test this in the public eye.

To gain a deeper understanding of what this discovery means for cryptography that relies on these systems, Shielded Labs and Eigen Labs jointly announced the HashSmash Project. The competition will consciously guide AI agents into the world's most widely used cryptographic hash function to explore whether it has the potential to be exploited.

Building a future-oriented security cornerstone for Zcash

HashSmash will initially challenge SHA-256, SHA-3, BLAKE3 and Poseidon. These hash functions act as digital fingerprints, help verify data and provide security on everything from blockchain and zero-knowledge systems to software and Internet infrastructure. The goal is very straightforward: to explore the extent to which increasingly powerful AI can advance cryptanalysis (i.e. code cracking), identify possible weaknesses, and evaluate which cryptographic methods are most robust under stress.

Zooko Wilcox, co-founder of Zcash and chief product officer of Shielded Labs, said: "Rapid advances in AI may threaten the cryptographic foundation of digital security. Relying on HashSmash powered by the Yukon platform, humans and AI collaborate to strengthen these foundations and accelerate scientific discovery."

Anyone who puts an AI agent into a challenge and uses a tool or technology of their choice (including SAT solvers, automated differential searches, formal methods, or combinations thereof) can participate in the competition. Any proposed attack plan must clearly demonstrate what it can break and the computing resources required. Submissions are first reviewed by an AI validator and then reviewed by a committee of expert cryptographers. All results are public, allowing researchers and agents to continue working based on previous discoveries and jointly build a shared frontier that continues to advance and assists AI in cryptanalysis.

Yukon
