Starknet's native token STRK rose more than 107% weekly, and the market heated debate turned to independent Layer 1
Starknet's native token $STRK has soared more than 107% in the past week, becoming one of the most eye-performing assets in the crypto market. The main catalyst for the rise was a statement from the Starknet team that it was actively considering transitioning from the Ethereum Layer 2 (L2) network to a fully independent Layer 1 (L1) blockchain.
Key announcements triggering market fluctuations
On October 8, 2026, Starknet announced on its official account: "We are actively considering becoming L1. This will make Starknet the first network to be fully quantum-resistant, and our target year is 2027."
This announcement was enough to push $STRK to its highest level in nine months. The token outperformed Bitcoin and Ethereum, setting its largest one-day gain in a year.
At the Token2049 conference held from October 7 to 8, StarkWare CEO Eli Ben-Sasson revealed that Starknet is evaluating the possibility of transitioning from the Ethereum Layer 2 architecture to a stand-alone Layer 1 blockchain, aiming to become the first fully quantum-resistant L1 network by 2027.
Ben-Sasson pointed out that becoming L1 will allow Starknet to directly control post-quantum security upgrades rather than relying on Ethereum's timetable. It is worth noting that no final decision has been made yet. The market is currently trading on this concept, not the transformation that has been completed. The project is still in the "active consideration" stage, a launch date for the new Layer 1 has not yet been confirmed, and governance approvals have not yet been finalized.
Potential impact on the broader Layer 2 ecosystem
The strong market reaction raises a broader question: Will other Ethereum Layer 2 projects follow suit? The momentum around $STRK suggests investors are interested in Layer 2 networks that demonstrate a path towards greater protocol independence.
A separate chain allows Starknet to coordinate governance, security and infrastructure around a single goal rather than being limited by the constraints of being an Ethereum Layer 2. For investors, this builds a more ambitious narrative than regular product launches, transforming $STRK from a token tied to an extended network to a token that could be tied to a new Layer 1 identity.
Traders should also pay close attention to recent supply developments. A token unlock for early contributors and investors was arranged on October 15, 2026, which is the most noteworthy node in the near future. Whether strong trading volume can absorb this new supply will be a key test of whether the rebound has staying power.
