The incident raised questions about the security of purchasing hardware wallets from dealers, even dealers previously included in the authorized list. CryptoBilis, which previously operated as an official distributor of Ledger products in Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines, has suspended sales of all hardware wallets after the investigation was launched.
Ledger said it is currently in ongoing discussions with CryptoBilis about next steps, but it is unclear whether the issue is limited to this or whether it affects more other equipment distributed by the dealer.
The presence of unauthorized implants raises the possibility that the device may be tampered with at some point after manufacturing and before reaching the end user. Currently, neither Ledger nor CryptoBilis has clarified how, when and by whom the device was promised.
Ledger maintains that its internal production processes and supply chains have not been compromised, indicating that the incident may have been limited to equipment distributed through CryptoBilis.
Security advice for CryptoBilis customers
Ledger urges customers who purchase hardware wallets from CryptoBilis not to set up unused devices until continued investigation provides further clarity. For users who have already activated such devices, it is recommended to follow established security protocols and use new mnemons to transfer funds to their new Ledger wallets.
The company reiterates that it is crucial not to disclose mnemonics and ensure that any new equipment comes from a trusted source to minimize risk.
The recent incident shows that even wallets obtained through official channels can be compromised if the supply chain is not fully secure. This highlights the need for all cryptocurrency holders to remain vigilant.
Scale of the loss and future steps
Investigators said the estimated loss exceeded US$86 million, affecting holders of Bitcoin, Ethereum and wavefield. This number was reported by blockchain expert Specter, but has not yet been verified by Ledger.
Authorities have not disclosed the number of customers ultimately affected, It also did not say whether the situation exceeded the scope of CryptoBilis distribution equipment. The investigation continues as Ledger and CryptoBilis work together to clarify timelines, tamper sources, and possible remedies.
