Co-CEOs are actually quite common in both traditional and crypto industries. For example, companies like JP Morgan or Bybit. The goal is always to achieve a situation where “1+1>2”.
Q: Regarding the so-called “white glove” practices in the cryptocurrency listing process, what’s the truth behind these rumors?
He Yi: Binance has never engaged in such practices. There are many people who claim to be relatives of CZ, my brother, or friends of mine. But let’s think about it from their perspective—do I really need such “white gloves”? Binance doesn’t charge any fees for listing cryptocurrencies. All that matters is meeting the listing standards. If a project is willing to distribute tokens to users, we welcome that. Additionally, I’m Binance’s second-largest shareholder. I don’t need to steal money from myself, and at the same time, damage the brand.
I also know another reason for this: Binance has high standards for listing cryptocurrencies. Some people try to act as middlemen, for example, helping with paperwork while claiming that they won’t charge if the listing fails. But the real issue is not whether someone can list a coin or not; what matters most is the quality of the project itself.
Binance is licensed around the world. Listing a coin isn’t something that can be done without proper procedures. If anyone hears about such “white glove” practices, please report them and bring them to law enforcement for prosecution.
Q: As a co-CEO, and being a woman, how do you see your role in this context? What are your thoughts on this new role?
He Yi: It’s not easy for women to handle such responsibilities. (Laughter.) The key isn’t which industry a woman belongs to, but whether she sets unrealistic expectations for herself. If you think you can’t do something, then you really can’t do it.
Additionally, if you are willing to leverage your gender advantages—such as a more friendly appearance, greater influence, and better communication skills—then this can be considered another form of “anti-professionalism”. In the business world, people still value your professionalism; they won’t give in just because you’re female (except when it comes to opening doors). Both men and women face the same level of attacks and insults. A weakness can become an advantage, and an advantage can also turn into a weakness.
Let’s move away from discussions about gender. No matter which position you hold, the important thing is to do your job professionally.
Q: What plans does Binance have for the prediction market? Will these meet the needs of its community?
He Yi: Never say never. I once said that Binance wouldn’t engage in contract trading, and that Memecoin wasn’t feasible. But now I’ve learned to be more cautious. I don’t say definitely no, nor do I say definitely yes. Voices are influenced by interests, and each statement represents a perspective from a particular angle.
I haven’t had time to study the prediction market thoroughly yet. I don’t understand it enough yet.
Q: Binance has already 300 million users. From an internal perspective, how would you evaluate Binance’s achievements and shortcomings by 2025?
He Yi: I’m a demanding boss, and my colleagues face high work pressure. Binance’s products still lack smoothness in user experience, and there are insufficient local features. There’s still much for Binance to improve, but one thing it has over its competitors is its focus on users.
No matter how much people within the industry attack each other, in reality, we all benefit or suffer together. We want to showcase the positive aspects of the industry to the outside world.
The Crypto market is already a highly competitive one, with more and more people joining the industry. Prices in this market are starting to align with those of traditional finance. Under such circumstances, the structure of our users has changed. Major investors and traditional giants are also joining the market. They will sell out of altcoins before Bitcoin does. We strive to balance the interests of individual investors as much as possible. This is the foundation of Binance’s operations, and that’s why I remain on the front line all these years. I hope that individual investors can still enjoy opportunities for accessible and free financial services despite the challenges.
We do not engage in transactions with users. During extreme market conditions, when market makers and individual investors face each other, creating a vacuum in liquidity, it’s precisely because Binance doesn’t get involved that opportunities arise. This is the basic principle of the matching engine. And Binance continues to think about how to make the market more fair and reasonable.
Q: What is Binance’s biggest challenge right now? Which areas of business should we focus on next?
He Yi: The talent density is low. With the development of technology, there are many talented people in the Internet and AI industries. We want to have the best team possible, but since Crypto has been stigmatized, the pool of talented people is relatively small. It’s very important to have people who understand financial products and believe in the future of Crypto. These people are essential for building a world-class company.
So, one of my key responsibilities is to help Binance find the best people. I’ve been looking around for people from all over the industry, and I’m not targeting any particular company. I welcome talented people to join us.
Q: You mentioned that you admire Duan Yongping’s approach to business and investing. What ideas will you take from his approach? Can we create companies like步步高, OPPO, and Pinduoduo in the Crypto industry?
Q: What fundamental changes will the new organizational structure bring about? The three most important things you will be in charge of are:
He Yi: First, it’s about maintaining the culture of Binance. Success ultimately comes from culture, that is, being user-centric.
Second, it’s about building a more efficient system. As mentioned earlier, organizational efficiency is more important than relying on individual capabilities.
Third, we believe that “technological innovation is the driving force behind global progress.” Binance will introduce more AI technologies.
Q: How does Binance view the policy support provided by Hong Kong? How do we assess and plan for local development?
He Yi: Hong Kong is a financial center in Asia. Binance respects Hong Kong’s regulations, but we also see the difficult financial reports of local competitors. During our interactions with regulators, we found that there are many restrictions and challenges when accessing global liquidity. Therefore, we will take things one step at a time. We understand that there is always a process from discussion to implementation.
Q: After the “10.11 liquidity squeeze” incident, how will Binance, as a leader, restore liquidity? What are your specific strategies?
He Yi: The concept of “liquidity squeeze” refers to the situation where there is no trading at that moment. It doesn’t mean that trading will stop after the crisis passes. It’s not that people don’t have any coins anymore, but rather that their holdings of stablecoins are relatively large. Some people may lose money, but that doesn’t mean all the money is running away from them.
We also need to recognize that market size continues to grow. However, during periods of volatility or when there are few good investment opportunities, everyone tends to adopt more conservative strategies, such as investing in wealth management products.
Q: What are Binance’s plans regarding Memes?
He Yi: Actually, I don’t like seeing people creating Memes based on my tweets. When something goes up, I’m happy; when it falls, people criticize me. It puts a lot of pressure on me, and I even avoid using memes as humor. In reality, traders don’t care who creates the memes. They just want to find assets that reflect everyone’s trading emotions.
While any thing can be a Meme, I believe in Buffett’s long-term approach of investing in value-based assets. Memes often show overselling or overselling tendencies. Binance’s approach is to hope that every coin we invest in will increase in value, but that’s not realistic. What we can do is negotiate with project developers to provide benefits to users. Ultimately, we need to find a balance between optimism and risk management.
Q: What was your dream when you were 18? Have you achieved it today? What are your beliefs and motivations?
He Yi: I can’t remember clearly. At 18, I didn’t have a clear concept of wealth yet. But I had a book called “Choosing Heaven”, which I haven’t finished reading yet. I liked Chen Changsheng from the book; he always said, “I want to try.” I tried being a host and starting businesses. I wanted to give it a shot.
When I was still a little-known host, my friend Li Jiayi asked me about my life goals. I said I wanted to be someone who influences the world. Then I forgot about it myself. Many years later, I won an award that I hadn’t heard of before. She told me that I had achieved my childhood dream.
My motivation is “I want to try”.
Everyone has fear and emotions. The important thing is to accept them. “Clouds in the blue sky, water in the bottle” – we should accept both the good and bad things in life. Everything is part of the best arrangement.
Q: Will Binance resume using BUSD as its payment method? Are there plans to enter the US market? Will the regulatory environment become more stringent in the next election season?
He Yi: I’d like to give it a try. If it’s possible, I’ll do it. I’m willing to accept whatever happens.
American politics is complex, and we aren’t very close to it. Let’s keep things simple when discussing America. Binance is just a company trying to survive in a difficult situation; it has no ability to influence government policies or decision-making.
