ETH Capital outflows from Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs accelerate, putting pressure on the market
On October 8, large-scale investor withdrawals from U.S. spot Bitcoin and Ethereum exchange-traded funds (ETFs) continued to occur, and the entire cryptocurrency market is facing growing pressure. According to Farside Investors, in the most recent trading day, the Bitcoin ETF recorded net redemptions of $244.1 million, while the Ethereum ETF experienced outflows of $72.5 million. The two asset classes combined lost $316.6 million in one day.
This accelerating outflow of funds has caused some market analysts to question whether the bull market trend historically known as the "Uptober"(October bullish market) can continue in 2024. Traditionally, October has tended to bring gains to major cryptocurrencies, but this year's continued ETF redemptions suggest that institutional investors are taking a more cautious attitude.
In the first six trading days of October, the cumulative net outflow of Bitcoin ETF exceeded US$820 million, and the outflow rate increased in the second week. The largest redemption in a single day occurred on October 7, when investors withdrew $484.9 million from the Bitcoin ETF. Subsequently, on October 8, the Bitcoin ETF once again recorded an outflow of US$244.1 million, further highlighting the recent warming of investor caution.

The fall in prices led to massive liquidations among leveraged traders. In the past 24 hours, approximately $1.19 billion in crypto positions have been liquidated, including $356 million in Ethereum positions and $298 million in Bitcoin positions.
The large outflows of Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs reflected a shift in market sentiment, which also triggered a clearing of more than US$1 billion in crypto leverage in a single day. These developments together highlight the market's caution, with investors remaining highly vigilant about possible short-term declines in digital asset prices.
