The Trade Desk announced a 15% layoff, affecting approximately 575 employees worldwide.

The Trade Desk (TTD for short) disclosed on Friday that it plans to lay off approximately 15% of its workforce globally, involving approximately 575 employees in more than 21 countries. CEO Jeff Green positioned the layoffs as a strategic adjustment to a more efficient team rather than a signal of deteriorating financial conditions.

Restructuring expenses are expected to be between US$39 million and US$51 million, mainly for severance payments and employee benefits. Affected by the news, TTD shares fell 3% to close at $14.65 on Friday, erasing a 0.2% gain in pre-market trading.

The Trade Desk on Friday announced its plans aimed at a broad restructuring, deciding to lay off about 15% of its global workforce. After the announcement, the stock price fell 3% to US$14.65./ d/file/20260905/ppThe Trade Desk, Inc. (TTD)shares of 2010 had risen 0.2% in pre-market trading after the disclosure, but those gains disappeared after the start of standard trading session. CEO Jeff Green notified employees on September 3 and filed SEC Form 8-K the same day. The layoffs affect approximately 575 employees across 21 countries.

As of December 31, 2025, The Trade Desk has 3,843 full-time employees. A 15% layoff ratio means just over 500 employees will be affected.

The company expects restructuring expenses to be between US$39 million and US$51 million, mainly covering severance payments and employee benefit obligations. This figure will be partially offset by a $4 million to $5 million reduction in stock-based compensation expenses.

Green described the decision as a deliberate transition to a more compact, flexible organizational structure. He cited The Trade Desk's approximately $1.5 billion in cash reserves and zero debt as evidence that the company did not implement layoffs because of financial fragility.

Most layoffs are expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2026.

Resource reconfiguration strategy

The organization stated that the freed resources will flow to connected TV platforms and artificial intelligence-based advertising solutions, and management has identified these areas as higher priority expansion departments.

Back in early August, The Trade Desk failed to meet its second-quarter revenue expectations. At the time, management said the company was "taking decisive action to strengthen execution, upgrade the platform and clarify priorities."

A market analyst maintained a "buy" rating on the stock on September 3 with a price target of $19. Analysts pointed out that if the main competitor's advertising technology business may be restructured, the stock has potential room for growth.

TTD shareholders face a difficult year

Since 2026, TTD's share price has plunged 60%, and the decline in the past year has been as high as 71%. The stock was trading well below a 52-week high of $56.39.

Financial analysts expect full-year earnings per share to shrink to 40 cents, down from 90 cents last year. This will mark The Trade Desk's second consecutive year of declining profits after earning $1.66 per share in 2024.

Market forecasters also expect revenue to decline this year, with the downward trend continuing into 2027, based on FactSet.

The overall market performance was flat on Friday, with the S & P 500 and Dow Jones both down 0.2%, while the Nasdaq rose slightly 0.1%.

TTD closed at $14.65 at the end of trading on Friday, down 3% for the day.
