Bitwise launches self-custodian stock portfolio based on Coinbase tokenized stocks

Bitwise Asset Management has launched a new class of investment products that allow qualified investors outside the United States to hold professionally managed stock portfolios directly in their crypto wallets.

The product is called Automated Token Portfolio (ATP), which is based on Coinbase's recently launched tokenized U.S. stocks and uses portfolio technology provider Glider to perform automatic rebalancing based on a model designed by Bitwise.

The first batch of products covers three major themes: the expanded version of the "Top Seven U.S. Stocks" portfolio, the robot strategy portfolio, and the AI leader portfolio. Among them, the "Big Seven U.S. stocks" combination allocates equal weights to Apple, Microsoft, Nvidia, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, Tesla and SpaceX. Bitwise charges a 0.15% model usage fee, which excludes transaction costs and Glider platform fees.

There is one key difference between this product structure and traditional funds: investors do not need to transfer assets to fund managers, but always hold individual tokenized stocks in their non-custodial wallets. Glider automatically adjusts the portfolio to align it with Bitwise's model without investors having to relinquish asset custody.

Investment portfolios actively move towards wallets, rather than combining wallets when they are relocated

Matt Hougan, chief investment officer at Bitwise, said: "For more than a century, getting professional models has meant handing over assets to funds. ATP allows you to keep assets in your wallet, and the model comes to you proactively." He added that the product can achieve thematic investment exposure faster and more accurately than many traditional structures.

Since investors hold individual tokens rather than shares in a pooled fund, these tokens can also be used for decentralized finance (DeFi) applications, including operations such as lending, but subject to the risk of corresponding agreements. Bitwise said traditional brokerage accounts cannot provide this feature.

The day before the ATP launch, Coinbase launched tokenized versions of Apple, Nvidia, Meta and Alphabet on its Layer-2 blockchain Base. Bitwise's portfolio lineup suggests that more stocks may land on Base in the future, as its models also include Microsoft, Amazon, Tesla, SpaceX and SanDisk. Coinbase has not yet confirmed its next batch of tokenized shares. Glider has previously worked with Ondo Finance to leverage Ondo's tokenized stock products to provide personalized investment portfolios, so this collaboration is a natural extension of its existing model.

Bitwise, a crypto asset management company with US$9 billion in assets under management, has been expanding its on-chain product line this year, launching DeFi vault management services through Morpho in January and a crypto model portfolio for financial advisers in February.
