Between November 2 and November 7, 2021, four victims lost large amounts of cryptocurrency assets due to SIM card hijacking attacks. Here are the details of the specific case:

  • Victim One: About £ 40,000 (approximately US$52,840) was lost on November 2, of which £ 27,000 was traced to Sinkin's crypto account.
  • Victim 2: About 17,000 pounds (approximately US$22,457) were stolen between November 5 and 7, and all the stolen funds were later found in Singin's wallet.
  • Victim three: Loss of approximately £ 8,000 (approximately US$10,568) from Coinbase account on November 3. The investigation found that Xin Jin facilitated the transfer before the funds were transferred.
  • Victim Four: This was the single largest theft, and the victim's cryptocurrency was emptied of approximately £ 130,000 (approximately US$171,730) in two days. Law enforcement officials said Sinkin played a key driving role in the theft.

Investigators determined that Singin retained more than £ 44,000 (approximately US$58,124) of stolen assets. He used the stolen money for luxury vacations in Dubai, high-end accommodation in Canary Wharf and gilded tooth decorations (Grills).

Police investigation and legal consequences

Sinkin, who lives on Marsh Wall, Canary Wharf, pleaded guilty on September 28, pleading guilty to false statement, conspiracy to defraud and transfer of criminal property. In the ruling at the Inner London Crown Court, the judge issued the sentence, taking into account his two previous arrests-first at his apartment at Canary Wharf in 2021 and second at Heathrow Airport after returning from Dubai in October 2023. During both police inquiries, Xin Jin refused to answer questions.

Detective Constable Simon Ardeman of the City of London Police commented on the impact of the crime, pointing out that SIM card hijacking is a "complex and increasingly worrying form of crime and the case demonstrates its devastating consequences for victims." He emphasized that successful prosecutions showed that technology-assisted fraud can be traced and prosecuted with determination.

SIM card hijacking fraud represents a growing and complex threat that causes significant harm to victims. The case highlights the fact that even in highly technical crimes, careful investigation and cooperation can lead to successful prosecutions.

This sentence has been more than four years since the original theft occurred. Several suspects have also been charged in similar incidents related to the UK. In May this year, ten people in England faced charges for a telephone impersonation scam that resulted in at least one person losing £ 300,000 in cryptocurrency after the scammers disguised as law enforcement officers or cryptocurrency company employees to obtain wallet mnemonics.

International response and similar cases

International agencies have also responded to similar criminal acts. The FBI and HSI supported Poland's cybercrime unit, which detained four suspects on June 25. Authorities accused the gang of carrying out a SIM card hijacking attack to empty funds from cryptocurrency exchange accounts.

Cross-border verification and law enforcement cooperation is crucial to combating digital asset fraud.
