The distribution of the largest open positions is more dispersed than many people think. Binance leads with $219.7 million, followed by Gate ($206.9 million), Bybit ($120.1 million), MEXC ($118.8 million) and Bitget ($115.8 million). No single platform holds more than 12% of the total. Trading on a decentralized perpetual exchange means moving within the same overall size, but with different counterparties.
Leverage ratio of 14.4%: Dogcoin is on the same level as Ethereum, much higher than Bitcoin.
The absolute value has limited significance when there is no proportional reference. Therefore, we divide the open futures position by the market value of each coin. This ratio shows how much leveraged speculation is in the market relative to the size of the market.
Data source: All perpetual contracts based on our own statistics, data source CoinGecko, as of October 9. Market value comes from the same survey.
As a result, Dogecoin has a leverage ratio of 14.36%, which is actually the same as Ethereum, slightly lower than Solana, and almost four times that of Bitcoin (3.82%). This discovery breaks the familiar narrative in two ways. In the futures market, dogcoin is not at the top outlier, but at the midstream level among large altcoins. In contrast, Bitcoin and XRP have significantly lower leverage ratios, with a larger proportion of the market value based on non-leveraged positions.
This is a calm reading for the holder. If 14% of the market value is in leveraged positions, relatively small price fluctuations are enough to trigger a forced liquidation. Bitcoin requires greater volatility. This explains the large daily fluctuations of Dogecoin better than any emotional description.
Split funding rates: Which platforms are currently paying fees
Perpetual contracts have no expiration dates. In order to always anchor their prices to spot prices, long and short parties pay each other fees at fixed intervals, known as capital rates. When the rate is positive, the bulls pay the short; when the rate is negative, the flow direction reverses. Therefore, rates are both an indicator of sentiment and an ongoing cost.
In our survey, rates flow in both directions. On Binance and MEXC, the rate is 0.0034%; on Bitget, it is 0.0097%; and on OrangeX, Phemex and WhiteBIT, it is 0.01%. On these platforms, bulls are paying fees. It is-0.0034% on Bybit,-0.0017% on OKX, and-0.0014% on Gate. On these platforms, short sellers are paying fees.
The unified picture is quite different. After a wave of liquidations that hit bulls 94%, people expect consistent negative rates. Switching rates between different platforms indicates a mixture of positioning rather than a clear direction.
Zoom in on these numbers to a one-year scale to avoid being ignored because they seem small. The 0.01% funding rate is usually settled every eight hours, that is, three times a day. This results in a daily cost of 0.03%, and annual continuing fees alone at approximately 11%, excluding spreads and transaction fees. Holding positions for multiple months must first earn these costs.
2:1 instead of 50:1: Germany's BaFin leverage limit for retail customers
The leverage limit used by global futures exchanges is not available among German retail customers. On July 23, 2019, the German Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin) passed a general administrative order to translate the product intervention measures of European regulator ESMA into German law. The decree will take effect on August 1, 2019 and has no expiration date.
For cryptocurrency CFDs, it requires an initial margin of 50% of the nominal value. This corresponds to a maximum leverage ratio of 2:1. For comparison, other levels of the same decree: 30:1 for major currency pairs, 20:1 for gold and major indices, 10:1 for other commodities, and 5:1 for individual stocks. Cryptocurrencies are at the lowest end, which is justified by their wider range of fluctuations.
There are three additional safeguards that in practice make more changes than the leverage numbers themselves. Once account equity plus unrealized gains fall below half of the total initial margin, the position must be closed. Balance protection prevents accounts from turning negative and retail customers are not obligated to raise margin. Providers must also display standardized risk warnings. Regulated crypto brokers in Germany automatically bring these restrictions.
Perpetual contracts from a regulatory perspective: ESMA statement in February 2026
This is where the legal status of such products (such as the dogcoin contract counted above) becomes interesting. In February 2026, ESMA issued a public statement reminding companies to check whether derivatives marketed as perpetual futures or perpetual contracts are part of national product intervention measures for CFDs. Authorities said the classification under MiFID II has nothing to do with the transaction name. The key is whether derivatives convey leverage exposure to the underlying asset and are not settled solely through physical delivery. Features such as on-site transactions, funding rates or voluntary balance protection do not change this fact.
PwC Legal's interpretation of these statements summarizes the consequences for the provider. ESMA did not issue new rules, but pointed out that existing rules apply. If Dogecoin perpetual contracts are distributed to retail customers within the EU and classified as contracts for difference, the 2:1 leverage and margin equalization mechanism in the BaFin Act apply. Higher leverage can only be found at providers outside the framework, thus losing the balance protection you can normally rely on.
Clearing price, cost of capital and regulation: Three key numbers before the next position
There are three numbers that determine whether a leveraged position can survive market fluctuations, and none of these three numbers are entry prices.
The first one is the clearing price. It appears in the order window before opening a position and indicates the price at which the exchange will force the position to be closed. Compare it with recent weekly lows: Dogecoin's low this week is $0.081186, starting at $0.097 on October 4. If the clearing price is within this range, the next opportunity will be touched.
The second is the cost of capital. Multiply the current rate by the number of three payments per day and the period of time you plan to hold it. At 0.01% and holding for three months, the nominal cost is approximately 2.7%, and your position must earn this gain first.
The third is your provider's regulatory framework. Check whether it is supervised in Germany or the EU, whether balance protection applies, and whether margin tightening takes effect at 50%. Without these three commitments, you take risks that are different from what you expected when pricing.
Without leverage, there is no clearing price: Anyone who keeps DOGH on their device can survive fluctuations in futures market prices that have already been forced to close out. Reverse testing is also true. The positions in your own hardware wallet know neither the clearing price nor the cost of capital. In exchange, you will need to invest the full principal amount and keep your own mnemonics. Which form is right for you depends on whether you are willing to tolerate price fluctuations or prefer to let the exchange make decisions for you.
DogeOS and soft forks: The second front outside the futures market
While futures markets explain daily fluctuations, a development with a longer perspective is taking place along the chain. At the end of September, the MyDoge Wallet team's project DogeOS opened its public testing network. It is compatible with the Ethereum virtual machine, so developers can port existing tools and code. Technically it is a zero-knowledge Rollup, an independent layer that regularly writes its status to the Dogecoin blockchain. DOGH serves as an expense currency in it and does not issue a separate network token. According to the project, Polychain Capital provided US$6.9 million in funding.
This approach has one limitation that is rarely mentioned. The Dogcoin main network currently does not verify zero-knowledge certificates at this level. Security relies on validators, protected execution environments, and permission sorters. The main network needs to directly verify the certificate and needs to make protocol changes. Currently, there is only a draft. The main online launch date has not yet been determined.
Our assessment of the current situation of the dogcoin futures market
In our view, this week's wave of liquidations is not an exception to Dogecoin, but an inevitable and predictable consequence of a leverage ratio of 14.36%. This article provides three pieces of evidence to support this: the ratio itself (which actually matches Ethereum's 14.39%); open interest contracts are widely spread among 106 contracts and have no dominant platform; and split funding rates, which no longer show unilateral positioning. The opposite truth is that our snapshot was only captured for one day; whether the ratio remains structurally high can only be determined after a few weeks. Numbers cannot yield any statement about the direction of prices. This ratio describes the intensity of the fluctuation, not the sign of direction.
Dogecoin leverage: In Germany, the upper limit is 2:1, not 50:1
You can draw a three-step conclusion from today's numbers:
First, check the leverage ratio your provider uses and whether it is subject to the BaFin Act. An overview of supervised providers can be found in the relevant comparisons.
Second, before any leveraged position, the clearing price is calculated based on weekly lows and the cost of funds is calculated based on the holding period. The terms provided by each platform can be compared and viewed through the perpetual exchange.
Third, make a deliberate choice between leveraged positions and spot holding. Hold custody that requires your own control, such as a hardware wallet.
