XRP and Algorand: Who won the quantum security race?

XRPL verifiers refute the claim that Algorand is fully quantum-resistant.

XRPL (XRP ledger) verifiers questioned the claim that Algorand is fully quantum-resistant."pointing out that the quantum-resistant account is only one aspect of the solution to the problem. This distinction is crucial: despite substantial progress made by Algorand, its consensus system still relies in part on classical cryptography, which could be threatened if sufficiently powerful quantum computers emerge in the future.

At the same time, Ripple is working with Project Eleven to conduct a broader systematic evaluation of XRPL, covering aspects such as validators, managed services, wallets, and network architecture.

Although Algorand started early, it has not yet completed building the entire system.

Algorand introduced the Falcon post-signature scheme in State Proofs in 2022 to protect the trustworthy records of historical ledgers. Subsequently, the post-quantum account based on native Falcon was officially launched on the main network in August 2026.

However, the network does not currently achieve full anti-quantum defense capabilities. Its current use for verifiable random functions (VRFs) selected by the Consensus Committee still relies on elliptic curve cryptography; consensus messaging also uses the Ed25519 signature algorithm, which is not quantum-resistant.

Algorand expects to conduct research on post-quantum VRF in early 2027 and plans to achieve full quantum resilience by the end of 2027. Therefore, the claim that Algorand is already "completely anti-quantum safe" is too absolute.

XRP Ledger takes a more comprehensive advancement path

Ripple's technology roadmap aims to achieve a full post-quantum ready state by 2028. The plan is not limited to wallet signature upgrades, but also involves multiple levels of testing and optimization. Project Eleven is testing key aspects such as hybrid quantum signatures, verifier performance, Devnet workloads, and quantum-resistant trusteeship prototypes. Before transitioning to the original stiff fork upgrade, Ripple needs to further evaluate indicators such as signature size, storage overhead and throughput.

According to Project Eleven, the collaboration will conduct a comprehensive audit of XRPL's validator, hosting, network and wallet levels, and will then provide actual code and real performance data. This work builds on early results from Project Eleven previously reported by Coinpaper.

In addition, XRPL also has a structural advantage: native key rotation. Users can change signing keys without migrating to a new account, which promises to make future migration processes more convenient than those on networks that require manual transfer of assets.

Our previous analysis found that approximately 300,000 XRPL accounts holding approximately 2.4 billion XRPs have not disclosed their public keys, which somewhat reduces the category of quantum risk we face in the future.

"Anti-quantum readiness" is a multi-dimensional competition

The more important revelation is that "anti-quantum readiness" is not a switching of a single function, but requires coordinated migration from multiple levels from wallets, verifier signatures, consensus mechanisms, escrow services to basic cryptographic primitives. Because of this, Algorand can continue to improve the consensus layer while providing anti-quantum accounts, while XRPL can simultaneously promote testing and upgrades at other levels of the network, even if it lags behind in the deployment of native accounts.

As of Thursday, XRP prices were approximately US$1.43, a decline of approximately 1%-2% on the day and more than 50% from the same period last year.
