Quantum security: Algorand and takes a critical step with XRPL
In recent discussions on "quantum readiness", Vet, a verification node operator at XRPL (XRP Ledger), challenged Algorand's claim that comprehensive quantum security has been achieved. Vet pointed out that while quantum resistance accounts are important, the consensus structure in the network and the cryptographic components spread across the network are equally crucial.
Has Algorand completed its quantization process?
Although Algorand adopted post-quantum signature technology based on the Falcon algorithm as early as 2022 and plans to further integrate these signatures into the main network by August 2026, experts warn that the network is not yet fully quantum resistant. Currently, the consensus committee's selection process relies on verifiable random functions (VRFs), which are still based on elliptic curve cryptography. In addition, the messaging protocol uses Ed25519, which lacks quantum resilience.
How does Ripple prepare XRPL for dealing with quantum threats?
Ripple and Project Eleven are conducting an extensive review of the XRPL ledger. The survey covered multiple aspects such as verification nodes, hosting infrastructure, wallets and network layers. The goal of the roadmap is to achieve full post-quantum readiness by 2028. In addition to wallet signatures, the scope of testing also includes hybrid quantum signature methods, verifying node performance, Devnet workloads, and quantum resistance managed prototypes.
Vet emphasized that although quantum resistance accounts are an important step, this alone will not make the network fully quantum secure. Ripple's ongoing commitment includes testing the impact of larger signatures on storage and transaction capacity. The XRPL ecosystem provides native key rotation capabilities that allow users to modify signing keys without changing accounts, which is expected to make future transition needs easier than networks that require asset transfer.
Recent analysis shows that approximately 300,000 XRPL accounts hold nearly 2.4 billion XRPs, whose public keys are not publicly disclosed, a factor that may help mitigate future quantum risks.
