Standard & Poor's Global Releases Evaluation Framework for Digital Asset Lending Vaults to Deepen Chain Investment Risk Analysis

On October 5, 2026, S&P Global Ratings officially launched an evaluation framework for Digital Asset Lending Vaults, further extending its risk analysis business to concentrated chain investment areas. The announcement introduced "Vault Risk Assessments"(VRAs), which are designed to help investors compare the impairment risk to their positions.

The focus of this release is to establish an analytical methodology rather than directly publishing the scores of specific vaults. Standard & Poor's said that preliminary assessment results will be disclosed in future announcements. At the same time, the company clearly distinguishes this product from credit ratings and emphasizes that these assessments do not involve comments on earnings levels.

Six major risk factors behind the assessment

This framework mainly examines six dimensions: portfolio credit quality, liquidity mismatch, curator risk, blockchain risk, agreement risk, and treasury security and governance. As a result, its scope of inspection goes beyond the assets held by the treasury itself to the underlying infrastructure and people responsible for managing these investments.

The treasury allocates capital by pooling deposits and based on established strategies. Standard & Poor's pointed out that such arrangements may be implemented through automated smart contracts or may involve manual discretionary management. Depositors receive share tokens that represent their proportionate interest in assets and cumulative returns, while contracts enforce allocation rules and risk parameters set by the curator.

The announcement compares the treasury with traditionally managed fixed income funds, pointing out that its on-chain structure can replicate the functions of traditional money market funds, private credit, private equity and hedge funds.

For investors, this structure combines investment exposure with operational dependence. Visible trading history does not by itself describe the quality of the portfolio, the effectiveness of withdrawal management, or the mechanisms for controlling policy changes.

Growth in capital size drives disclosure under review

Standard & Poor's estimates that as of September 2026, total deposits in lending vaults will be approximately US$10 billion, compared with only US$1.5 billion in September 2024. It should be noted that these data are market estimates of the company and are not independently verified totals, and the announcement does not provide detailed calculation basis.

Although blockchain activities provide real-time transparency, policy and risk disclosures are often still limited. S & P believes its assessments are designed to provide institutional investors with additional information to assist in investment decision-making governance and screening, including comparing different vaults under a consistent analytical approach.

This makes the framework important for assessing depositors with concentrated lending exposure and managers selecting on-chain investment vehicles. The design of these six factors clarifies the categories that need to be reviewed in addition to headline returns, avoiding viewing high advertised yields as evidence of low-risk.

Data and security expansion comes first in treasury scoring

The release coincides with S & P Global's strategic investment in Kaiko in September, a move that expands its relationship with digital asset data providers. These two initiatives address different aspects of institutional involvement: market information and investment risk assessment.

In addition, Standard & Poor's also announced that it will reach an agreement to acquire OpenZeppelin on September 17. The transaction involves on-chain security capabilities and remains independent of the newly launched treasury methodology; signing the acquisition agreement does not mean that the integration has been completed.

The ultimate test will be how the framework can be applied to specific named vaults. The announcement did not provide the initial treasury score and launch date of evaluation results, nor did it show its actual impact on investment decisions. Investors will still have to wait for subsequent publications to review specific conclusions and their supporting analysis.
