DeFi Development Corp. increases its holdings in Solana to build a digital asset vault

DeFi Development Corp. (ticker symbol: DFDV) is a financial services and asset management company known in the crypto ecosystem for having the world's second-largest Solana (SOL) holdings. The company recently announced that it had added 26,202 SOLs to the treasury, worth approximately US$3 million. According to Form 8-K documents used by public companies to disclose major events, the funds were transferred between September 28 and October 2.

The Nasdaq-listed company currently holds 2,564,212 SOLs and "SOL equivalents"(the term is not clearly defined in the filing document). It valued the assets at US$302 million, a 1% increase from the 2,538,010 SOL holdings on September 25.

The pace of holdings is slowing down, but management remains optimistic

Despite the increase in total positions, the company's pace of asset accumulation is slowing down. Data showed that in the week ending September 18, DFDV increased by 101,381 SOLs; in the following week, the number dropped to 47,706 SOLs. However, CEO Joseph Onorati interpreted the trend from a different perspective in a company press release.

"The DFDV ship is moving at lightning speed. We continue to buy SOL and our treasury has grown by 11% since August 12,"Onorati said. However, the "lightning speed" here is actually about half the growth rate of the previous week.

Digital Asset Vault Model: Applying Bitcoin Strategies to Solana

DFDV belongs to the so-called Digital Asset Treasury Company, whose main strategy is to pile a single cryptocurrency on its balance sheet. The company applies the model Michael Saylor's Strategy has popularized in Bitcoin to Solana and runs its own Validators, computer devices that help run the network and earn rewards. For shareholders, the appeal of this model is that exposure to SOL can be obtained through regular securities brokerage accounts.

DFDV positions itself as a bolder bet in the Solana space. Onorati said in an August statement that the company aims to provide investors with amplified SOL exposure. In practice, this means that fluctuations in SOL prices will have a more drastic impact on stock prices, whether it is up or down.

Financing Instruments and Capital Operations

In order to raise funds to purchase SOL, the company issued CHAD preferred shares. According to the prospectus, part of the funds will be used to purchase SOL. CHAD has a face value of $10 and currently pays a dividend of 13% annually, or $1.30 per share. Based on the same prospectus, the board of directors can adjust the interest rate.

In addition, the company has established a $300 million At-the-Market Program, a way to sell new shares over time at market prices. On September 1, the company offered 2.2 million CHAD shares at $9 per share, a move that could raise $19.8 million. An initial public offering (IPO) two days later was priced at $8 per share, issuing a total of 1.375 million shares and raising approximately $11 million. This is a small amount of money compared to the company's treasury assets valued at $302 million.

Performance Growth and Company Transformation

As of September 30, the company released preliminary third-quarter estimates (non-final results). Data shows that since August 12, both SOL holdings per share and total SOL quantities have achieved double-digit growth. Net assets per share (the residual value of common stock after deducting debt and preferred stock from positions and cash) increased by more than 100%.

Before its transformation in 2025, the company was called Janover and was a commercial real estate platform. In May 2025, it held nearly 600,000 SOLs, but now its position has more than four times the previous one.

Potential risks and dividend distribution

However, there is a trap in the digital asset vault (DAT) model. Such vaults expand by issuing shares at a premium, meaning that the value of the token behind each share is higher than the share price. History has proven that growth tends to stagnate when stock prices fall below their token value. By December 2025, the share prices of many such companies have slipped below the value of their crypto asset holdings, and Strategy is no exception.

As of now, the company has announced a CHAD dividend of $0.00516 per share from each business day to October 30.
