Lynn Allen: AI, inflation and Bitcoin's role in capital flows
Lyn Alden, a prominent macroeconomic analyst and investor, provides the latest insights on the continued advancement of artificial intelligence, shifts in monetary policy and how stock market trends are shaping the cryptocurrency landscape, with a special focus on Bitcoin.
AI-driven abundance and inflation dynamics
Allen pointed out that while Silicon Valley supporters emphasize that artificial intelligence will usher in an "era of abundance," this technological shift does not necessarily lead to a reduction in monetary inflation. She distinguishes AI-led price deflation-in which certain white-collar services and products become extremely cheap-from broader monetary forces driven by central banks and fiscal policymakers.
In Allen's analysis, even if AI technology improves efficiency and reduces the cost of many digital services, central banks may still continue to expand the money supply through various forms of stimulus measures. As a result, asset prices like Bitcoin, which are inherently scarce, are unlikely to experience significant deflation simply because AI makes certain services cheaper.
In short, although AI has significantly reduced the price of certain services, the price of scarce assets like Bitcoin is unlikely to fall directly due to this technological change.
Fiscal dominance and monetary policy challenges
While discussing the current macroeconomic environment, Allen observed that the U.S.'s large fiscal deficit will persist and could further limit the Fed's ability to manage inflation. She mentioned the concept of "fiscal dominance," in which fiscal policy overrides monetary intervention, making it more difficult for the central bank to control price increases.
Allen said that in the face of these pressures, the central bank may eventually have to support the government debt market by purchasing more government bonds, injecting liquidity into the system and strengthening potential inflationary trends.
This complex interaction between government spending, central bank response and market sentiment continues to affect investment in risky assets and stores of value.
The rotation of funds from AI stocks to Bitcoin
Allen discussed whether funds might flow back from high-flying AI stocks to Bitcoin if the artificial intelligence sector reaches market peaks. She explained that once valuations appear too high, a sharp rise in AI stocks could prompt investors to seek alternative assets, and Bitcoin remains one of the main contenders, with its limited supply and established role as a hedge against inflation.
After AI stocks experienced a strong rebound, funds may flow to Bitcoin, providing another source of demand for the cryptocurrency market.
