XRP Ledger developers release the ninth version of the Intelligent Hosting Test Network to promote the implementation of programmable functions.
The developer team of XRP Ledger (XRPL), a public blockchain that supports XRP digital assets, has released the ninth version of the Smart Escrow Test Network, marking a step closer in the launch of programmable hosting functions.
Ninth version of the Intelligent Hosted Test Network released
Mayukha Vadari, senior software engineer at RippleX, described the release as an important milestone towards a production environment. RippleX is a division of Ripple that focuses on the development of XRPL infrastructure and tools. Vadari, one of the lead authors of the smart hosting proposal, explained that the team continues to review and test the smart hosting framework before it is fully rolled out.
Developers of experimental intelligent hosting technology need to update their configurations to accommodate changes introduced in the latest testnet version.
The ninth version includes a number of underlying improvements, one of which is the adjustment of the intelligent hosting architecture. This update completes the migration of WebAssembly virtual machine integration from the C++ programming language to the Rust language.
Noun explanation: WebAssembly (Wasm) allows code written in multiple programming languages to run securely and efficiently on multiple platforms, including blockchain. Migrating from C++ to Rust is often aimed at improving memory security, performance, and support for a modern tool chain.
Performance improvements and architecture optimizations
Vadari pointed out that the new framework based on Rust creates a unified entry point for managing Gas billing, error handling and system inspections. According to the development team, after this architecture reorganization, the performance of each host function call has improved by 30% to 50%.
In addition to language migration, the team also standardized the naming of host functions, ledger fields, transaction engine result codes, and execution entry points, bringing the technology closer to production readiness.
Vadari emphasized that the programmability of XRPL is constantly advancing and is currently working to introduce programmable hosting functions to the platform.
Programmable escrow: Extended application scenarios
Currently, standard escrow on XRPL allows users to lock in funds until a specified time or until encryption conditions are met. Smart hosting introduces a new level: Users can attach a WebAssembly program to the hosting agreement to define custom funds release conditions.
This approach can enable more complex arrangements, such as requiring third-party notaries 'approval, holding funds for compliance verification, or managing complex transactions such as real estate purchases and auctions.
In practical applications, smart hosting will only release assets after obtaining approval, completing compliance checks, or successfully entering external data that meets predetermined criteria through the oracle.
This feature set has been outlined in the XLS-100 proposal, which is seen as an initial step towards bringing deeper programmability to XRP Ledger, aiming to address scenarios that go beyond simple hosting mechanisms.
