Metaplanet demonstrated liquidity through buying and selling operations, resulting in a net increase of 1,000 bitcoins.
On October 5, 2026, Metaplanet, a Tokyo-listed company, disclosed a transaction aimed at demonstrating its liquidity: the company first sold 10,000 bitcoins, and then repurchased 11,000 bitcoins, ultimately achieving a net increase of 1,000 BTC. The move marks a further upgrade in the company's balance sheet management strategy.
Demonstrate liquidity with transactions
Metaplanet issued a "Notice on Additional Purchases of Bitcoin (Including Sales and Repurchases to Demonstrate Liquidity)" on its official investor announcement page. The company made it clear that this "sell and buy" operation sequence is to prove to the market that it has the ability to mobilize Bitcoin assets on a large scale without affecting its own positions or encountering execution problems. As the number of repurchases exceeded the number of sales, the company's Bitcoin inventory actually increased.
Launches Net Interest Income Strategy
In addition to demonstrating liquidity, Metaplanet has also introduced a new initiative called the "Net Interest Income Strategy." This is part of the company's broader efforts to extract additional returns from its balance sheet beyond simply holding Bitcoin and waiting for the price to rise. At the same time, the company released its third-quarter "Bitcoin Revenue Generation Business" performance report. The division was established specifically by Metaplanet to generate a profitable return on investment by linking it to core Bitcoin positions.
Capital Allocation Policy Revision
In the same disclosures, Metaplanet also announced further revisions to its capital allocation policy. Since transitioning away from its original hotel business, Metaplanet has adopted an aggressive Bitcoin accumulation strategy, drawing on MicroStrategy's model to fund regular Bitcoin purchases through stock issuance, bond sales and other financing mechanisms. As one of the most high-profile corporate Bitcoin treasury holders in Asia, the company's disclosure documents have attracted much attention in Asian markets and are regarded as a benchmark for companies outside the United States adopting Bitcoin treasury management. Its share price often fluctuates with announcements of its Bitcoin positions and financing activities.
The move towards complex treasury management tools
This unusual structure of selling 10,000 bitcoins first and immediately buying back 11,000 bitcoins suggests that Metaplanet wants to demonstrate its ability to efficiently execute large transactions. This could pave the way for future strategies that require transactions of similar size, such as using Bitcoin as collateral for lending arrangements or performing larger treasury rebalancing operations. Combined with a new net interest income strategy and updated capital allocation policies, the October 5 disclosure points to a company that is actively trying to move beyond the simple "buy and hold" model of complex treasury management tools.
