The Bitwise Dogecoin ETF closed before it was a year old, CEO analyzes the gap between traditional investors and crypto users
As the Bitwise Spot Dogecoin ETF prepares to terminate trading before its first anniversary, the company's CEO elaborated on the significant differences between traditional fund investors and cryptocurrency users. As one of the most well-known assets in the cryptocurrency community, Dogecoin failed to attract the expected attention of the exchange-traded fund (ETF) market.
Hunter Horsley, CEO of Bitwise, described the failure of the company's spot dogcoin ETF as a "tragic" event and said the result highlighted the huge divisions between two very different groups of investors.
This bitwise Dogecoin ETF is traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the code BWOW and will be launched in November 2025. However, over time, the fund's trading volume and asset size under management have remained low. As of October 7, the fund's total assets were approximately $726,000, while September's trading volume was only approximately $51,000. The fund is scheduled to cease trading on October 14.
According to Horsley, users who have expressed interest in Dogecoin through encryption applications have different expectations from traditional investors who buy ETFs. Despite the large community base of crypto exchanges, ETF investors are cautious about holding DOGE positions, indicating that popularity does not automatically translate into demand for all financial products.
In contrast, Bitwise's Solana pledge ETF situation is very different. The company's BBSOL fund's net asset management scale has reached approximately US$1.3 billion. Horsley said that this interest stems not only from pledge proceeds, but also from market expectations about the growth prospects of its tokenization, stablecoins and on-chain financial activities on the Solana Network.
This difference sends an important message to altcoin ETFs: a strong community base or social media popularity does not necessarily mean that traditional investors will inject money into the product. In order to generate sustained demand, funds need to have a use case, growth story, or profit model that investors can understand.
Although dogcoin's cultural influence in the crypto market continues, the BWOW case proves that this influence alone is not enough to succeed in the ETF channel.
