Chainalysis warns France: taxing crypto assets could lead to capital outflows
François Volpoet, the head of Chainalysis’ French division, pointed out that tax measures targeting the conversion of crypto assets into regulated stablecoins may drive investors towards overseas platforms with less regulatory oversight. The proposed capital gain tax rate is as high as 31.4%. In his analysis, he argued that such measures not only fail to increase tax revenue but may also complicate transaction monitoring efforts.
Key points
Chainalysis is concerned that crypto transactions may shift to offshore channels.
The proposed 31.4% tax rate applies to the conversion of certain crypto assets into regulated stablecoins.
This policy could have negative effects on participants who comply with Europe’s MiCA regulations.
Chainalysis fears that crypto traders may leave the industry.
François Volpoet expressed doubts about France’s new tax policies. As the head of Chainalysis in France, he warned that taxing the conversion of crypto assets into stablecoins might encourage investors to seek more flexible solutions.
His warning came a few days after lawmakers approved the tax measures for stablecoins at the committee meeting. The proposal aims to impose capital gain taxes on the conversion of cryptocurrencies into stablecoins. Previously, such exchanges between digital assets generally did not trigger any tax obligations for individuals.
