The historical background and value changes
No one knew at the time, but 2010 was destined to be a special year in Bitcoin's history. A Florida programmer named Laszlo Hanyecz once used 10,000 bitcoins to buy two pizzas, which was about $41 at the time. Today, the value of this asset has increased by more than a million times.
Since then, mining rewards have been halved four times, the most recent one being a halving event in April 2024, when the rewards dropped to 3.125 bitcoins. This cyclical event occurs approximately every four years. In contrast, the income from digging up a block today is only one-sixteenth of that from the two blocks back then.
Address Activity Tracking
The address itself is not completely idle: it transferred 100 bitcoins twice on August 8, 2015, 100 in December 2017, and 249 in March 2018. But these are other bitcoins-the Bitcoin system treats money as a separate individual unit like banknotes, so an address can spend some assets while others remain static. The Galaxy platform tracks specific coins rather than addresses and points out that this particular batch of coins has not been moved since 2010.
Coins from the early days of Bitcoin are known as the "Satoshi Era" coins, named after the network's anonymous founder, Satoshi Nakamoto. Recently, such coins are gradually awakening in clusters. For example, in February 2025, a batch of 50 bitcoins, each worth only US$0.10 during mining, were transferred after sleeping for about 15 years, and their value would be about US$5 million by then. Holders skipped the test transaction-people usually send small exploratory transfers first to ensure that the target address is valid.
In August this year, another batch of 49.97 bitcoins, which were first received in July 2011 and were traded at less than US$15 at that time, were transferred after sleeping for about 15 years and entered a wallet marked as FalconX by blockchain analysis platform Arkham. FalconX is a major broker serving trading companies. The label alone does not prove that a sale occurred.
Between August 16 and 26, a total of 553.59 bitcoins worth approximately US$40 million were transferred from six wallets that had been dormant since 2011, 2012, or 2014. Two of the wallets carried tags related to a lawsuit filed jointly by the State of New Jersey that required the court to declare 39,069 dormant addresses abandoned property.
As of Thursday, the 10 and 90.02 bitcoins remained in their new addresses without any further action. So Bitcoin holders can breathe a sigh of relief: the giant whale has not yet sold its assets-at least not yet.
