The price of Shiba Inu you see has nothing to do with you.
The Shiba Inu quote you see on the price page is almost entirely determined by a market that you, as a private investor in Germany, cannot participate in at all. At noon on October 8, the total daily turnover of more than 100 trading pairs was US$73.89 million, of which US$63.24 million came from trading pairs with the U.S. dollar stablecoin USDT. This accounted for 85.6% of the total. The turnover of euro-linked trading pairs was only US$1.1 million, accounting for only 1.49% of global turnover. Therefore, the price of Shiba Inu that your application displays to you is actually an average of several order books that you can neither touch nor rely on.
This may sound like a technical detail, but in daily practice it means a loss of real money. At noon at the same time, the spread between the narrowest and largest euro trading venues differed nearly thirty times. If a single order is placed in a narrow venue and another order is placed in a wide venue, the former will only pay a bid-ask spread cost of 21 cents for 1000 euros of funds, while the latter will pay 6.24 euros. This article aims to reveal the true pricing mechanism of Shiba Inu coins, how much price information can be transmitted to Germany, and what data you can verify before placing an order.
Shiba Inu Coin Price at noon on October 8: 0.0000537 USD and 0.0000480 EUR
According to market data from CoinGecko, at noon on October 8, the trading price of Shiba Inu coins was 0.0000537 US dollars and 0.0000480 euros. It fell 1.38% from the previous trading day, fell 7.03% in seven days, and was basically flat in 30 days, down slightly by 0.90%. Its market value is US$3.16 billion, ranking 37th in the overall market.
The fluctuation range for the day was narrow. The high in the past 24 hours was $0.00000548 and the low was $0.0000536, a gap of 2.24%. In comparison, the one-day increase on October 5 exceeded 4%. A calm day actually helps answer the questions raised in this article, as market volatility does not mask the differences between different trading venues.
Why are there two prices for the same token?
Prices in USD and EUR are derived from different order books. An order book is a list of all open buy and sell orders for a particular transaction pair at a given time. Each trading pair has its own order book, and each order book forms its own price. Euro prices are formed by orders actually existing in the euro order book, rather than by converting prices in US dollars. Due to arbitrage behavior-in which traders operate on both sides at the same time to take advantage of price differences-the two numbers usually remain close. But this will only be true if both parties have sufficient funds.
US$63.24 million of the US$73.89 million: USDT carries 85.6% of Shiba Inu trading volume
For the purpose of writing this article, we sorted out all 100 Shiba Inu trading pairs listed by CoinGecko at noon on October 8, and reported the 24-hour turnover by denominated currency. The results are as follows:
- Pair with USDT: US$63.24 million, accounting for 85.59%
- Pairing with Turkish lira: US$4.22 million, accounting for 5.71%
- Pairing with the US dollar itself: US$2.57 million, accounting for 3.48%
- Pairing with USDC: US$1.99 million, accounting for 2.69%
- Pairing with euro: US$1.1 million, accounting for 1.49%
USDT is a stablecoin whose value is anchored to a currency, here the U.S. dollar. Its issuer is Tether. As a result, more than two-fifths of Shiba Inu transactions are conducted through a tool, and licensed platforms in the European Economic Area may no longer allow the use of customer funds to trade content covered by MiCA, the European crypto regulatory regulation under the tool. This has a twofold effect on your purchase: you fail to participate in the largest share of the market, and the benchmark price you refer to is still formed there.
The euro window is narrow: Less than 1.5% of global Shiba Inu transactions are conducted in euros.
A single venue carries 21.3% of trading volume
The situation is even more severe if you rank by trading venue rather than denominated currency. The largest single venue at noon on October 8 was the BitDelta Exchange, with a turnover of US$15.7 million. This accounted for 21.25% of the total turnover of all Shiba Inu coins, and more than one-fifth of them were settled in one place. Closely followed by KuCoin, with a turnover of US$5.98 million, or 8.09%, and Binance, with a turnover of US$5.14 million, or 6.95%.
The spread reported at the largest venue was 0.37%. At the same time, the price difference for the narrowest euro venue is only 0.021%. So the most weighted venue in the average price is about eighteen times wider than the narrowest venue German investors can actually buy. The weighted average price silently carries this deviation.
What does the reported turnover tell you and what does it not tell you?
The turnover reported by the Exchange is self-reported. The price page takes this data from each location and gives it different weights. An unusually high turnover coupled with a relatively wide spread does not prove anything, but it is a reason why the number should not be taken as a sign of quality. What is really important to your decision-making is the depth of the order book at the place where you place your own order. The place with the largest trading volume in the world is not important here.
The euro order book is still a supporting role: US$1.1 million, accounting for only 1.49%
At noon on October 8, seven venues listed the euro trading pairs of Shiba Inu coins. Their total turnover was US$1.1 million. For comparison: The overall turnover of the German retail industry can reach this amount in just a few seconds. For a token with a market value of $3.16 billion, a euro market of this size is very weak and scattered among seven order books instead of one.
The following is the distribution in order of dollar turnover:
- Bitvavo: US$465,000
- Kraken: US$183,000
- Bit2Me: US$180,000
- Niza.io: US$92,000
- WhiteBit: US$88,000
- Coinbase Exchange: US$64,000
- Robinhood's Bitstamp: US$32,000
Which of these venues is open to you depends on the license and the type of account you have. For an overview of the providers serving German retail customers, please see our comparison of cryptocurrency exchanges. Transaction volume figures alone can only imply the depth of the order book and cannot reflect the quality of the provider.
Spread is from 0.021% to 0.624%: a 30-fold difference between seven euro venues
Spread is the difference between the best buy price and the best ask price in the order book. It is the price you pay for immediate execution. At noon on Thursday, the reported spread among the seven euro venues was as follows:
- Kraken: 0.0209%
- Niza.io: 0.0209%
- Bit2Me: 0.0417%
- Bitvavo: 0.0772%
- Coinbase Exchange: 0.2083%
- Robinhood's Bitstamp: 0.2083%
- WhiteBIT: 0.6237%
There is a nearly 30-fold difference between the narrowest and widest values. The final traded euro price showed little difference between all seven venues, ranging from 0.00004780 to 0.00004800 euros. As a result, the quotes are almost the same, but the execution costs are different. This cannot be displayed on the price page. Kraken publishes its own euro prices and ranges on its dedicated price page, while other providers only display ranges in the order book in the trading view.
Order per 1000 euros: 0.21 euros versus 6.24 euros. What is the price difference?
Calculate using an easy-to-remember number. A market order worth 1000 euros will completely bridge the spread. At 0.0209%, this will cost you 21 cents. At 0.6237%, the same order will cost you 6.24 euros. This € 6.03 difference occurs before any handling fees are charged and will reappear when you sell.
For an amount of 10000 euros, this means 2.09 euros and 62.37 euros respectively in each direction. This is equivalent to the total transaction fees for some providers for a full year. Fees appear in the price list, and spreads nowhere appear in the price list, which is why most people never notice it.
USDT has been excluded in the EU from July 1, 2026: Impact on benchmark prices
With the MiCA transition period ending on July 1, 2026, platforms holding MiCA licenses have removed USDT trading pairs from the available list of European Economic Area customers. The reason is not the Shiba Inu itself, but the requirements that the issuer of the stablecoin must meet. However, for you, the impact is specific: 85.6% of global Shiba Inu trading volume is in trading pairs that are no longer available to you on licensed platforms.
All that remains are trading pairs in euros and trading pairs with USDC (MiCA compliant stablecoins). At noon that day, USDC accounted for 2.69% of Shiba Inu coin turnover. Add the euro and USDC, and the market share open to you on licensed platforms is only about 4%. The remaining 96% sets the price you pay and you are not involved in it.
Turnover of 2.34% per unit market value: Why market orders can be expensive
Comparing daily turnover of $73.98 million to a market value of $3.16 billion, the result is 2.34%. This ratio explains how much of the circulating supply changes hands in a day. This number is useful as a rough indicator of how quickly the market absorbs larger orders.
On the same day, Dogecoin's turnover was US$865.45 million, and its market value was US$13.57 billion, accounting for 6.38%. Compared with its size, the turnover rate of this old memin is almost three times that of Shiba Inu. The practical significance for you is that an order of the same size will encounter a thinner order book on Shiba Inu coins, so it is more likely to cross multiple price ladders, and the average transaction effect will be poor. Limit orders allow you to set your own maximum price, thereby eliminating this risk, but the price you pay is no guarantee that you will get a deal.
Shiba Inu versus Dogecoin: Daily turnover of US$73.98 million versus US$865.45 million
In terms of turnover, the gap between these two major memin coins is much greater than the gap in market value. Based on market value, Shiba Inu is about four-fifths smaller than Dogecoin, but based on daily turnover, it is about one-twelfth smaller than Dogecoin. Both values fell on October 8, with Dogecoin falling slightly larger, at 2.18%, while Shiba Inu falling at 1.38%.
This gap has practical consequences beyond that day. The smaller the operating turnover relative to the size, the greater the impact of a single large sell-off on prices. Therefore, holders of Shiba Inu coins bear a risk that stems from market structure rather than news events. Even on a calm day, this risk will not disappear.
This situation can be summarized in one sentence: the prices you see are formed in a market that you cannot access as a German investor, and the prices you pay are formed in an order book that accounts for less than 1.5% of that market. These three steps turn this into a decision:
- Read the price difference at your location before placing an order.
In the trading view, the best bid price and best ask price are directly next to each other. If the gap exceeds 0.2%, execution costs alone will cost you more than two euros on 1000 euros. See our comparison of cryptocurrency exchanges for more information on available venues in Germany. - Find your provider's license in the ESMA registry.
Places without EU licenses lose you regulators and complaints channels in disputes. Licensed providers are listed in our comparison of regulated cryptocurrency exchanges. - Use limit orders instead of market orders on large amounts of funds.
A turnover of 2.34% per unit market value means that large market orders cross multiple price ladders. Limit orders limit the price you accept, and you can spread the order over a few days if needed. Tools to make order books and executions visible are listed in our analytics platform comparison.
