Lucas Matheson, CEO of Coinbase Canada, told CBC last month that the proposed regulations for stablecoins would “revolve the way Canadians interact with money and the internet forever.”

Canada’s stablecoin initiative aims to complement existing banking services

. In mid-July, the United States passed the GENIUS Act, which is considered one of the most comprehensive frameworks for regulating stablecoins to date. Since then, regulatory efforts related to stablecoins have gained momentum in Canada.

In recent months, both the UK and Hong Kong have also begun developing regulations regarding stablecoins.

Currently, the market size for stablecoins is approximately $313.6 billion. The U.S. Treasury Department estimated in April that by 2028, the market size for stablecoins could reach $2 trillion.

Canada is also working on establishing a “real-time railway” payment system to facilitate immediate settlements between businesses and consumers. At the same time, Canada is working to create an open banking framework, making it easier for people to switch banks.

Meanwhile, Canada has canceled its plan to introduce a central bank digital currency in September 2024. McClellan stated that there was no compelling reason to continue with this plan.
