U.S. government-affiliated wallets transfer over $100 million in crypto assets, intent to sell yet to be confirmed
Blockchain data analytics firm Arkham tracking shows that U.S. government-affiliated wallets have processed Bitcoin (BTC) and Binance (BNB) transfers worth more than $100 million. While the deals have sparked speculation that assets may be being sold, officials have not confirmed any sales so far.
Details of transfers and sources
Data shows that a total of 833,599 bitcoins were initially sent from government-linked wallets to two addresses that were not flagged by Arkham. At the time of the transfer, the bitcoins were worth about $71.6 million. These addresses then transferred bitcoins into wallets marked as Coinbase Prime deposit addresses within hours.
Of these seized bitcoins:
- 568.7 BTC came from assets confiscated in the Potapenko and Turogin cases;
- The remaining approximately 264.9 BTC came from seized assets related to the Bitfinex attack.
In addition, an additional 40,285 BNBs were transferred from a separate government wallet. The tokens, valued at approximately $31.63 million, were first transferred to an unmarked address and then to a second unknown wallet. According to reports, the BNB originated from assets confiscated from Alameda Research.
Analysis of the flow of funds: sale or custody?
Moving cryptocurrency to a Coinbase Prime address may in some cases imply a ready sale. However, addresses associated with exchanges can also be used for custody, wallet management, or inter-agency transfers. On-chain data alone does not prove that the asset has ultimately been sold.
Background Information
It is alleged that the U.S. government currently holds approximately US$27.5 billion worth of seized crypto assets. These assets stem from confiscation through legal processes rather than being purchased in the market through tax revenue.
According to the March 2025 decree, bitcoins transferred to the government are intended to be deposited into "strategic bitcoin reserves." However, there may be differences in the legal status of assets and authorization to sell in specific cases. Therefore, it is inaccurate to interpret these transfers as confirmed sales until official announcements.
