Infleqtion develops chip-scale optical cavities with Honeywell

Infleqtion has collaborated with researchers from Honeywell Aerospace and the University of California, Santa Barbara to develop a new type of integrated optical cavity. The team built the prototype device using silicon nitride chip technology at Honeywell's aerospace division's photonics wafer foundry. The device reduces the physical space required to stabilize laser light inside quantum computers, clocks and sensing systems.

This design uses semiconductor manufacturing processes that already support commercial production in mature manufacturing facilities. This method is expected to reduce the size of quantum hardware while maintaining the stability of the laser required for precision operations. In addition, it provides partners with a clearer path to mass production of the technology.

Optical cavities help lasers maintain stable performance in sensitive quantum systems and precision timing equipment. Traditional versions often require large and fragile desktop hardware, limiting their use outside of controlled research environments. New prototype devices shift this functionality to chip-level production and may support broader field deployments.

Quantum sensor design goals: navigation and timing

Infleqtion said that a smaller optical cavity could support precision navigation, atomic timing, data centers and telecommunications infrastructure. The technology can also enhance quantum sensors that require stable laser light within compact and durable devices. These application scenarios provide a practical path for the transformation from academic research to commercial systems in multiple industries.

The prototype device was designed by the OCAQπ team at the University of California, Santa Barbara and Infleqtion's engineering team. Honeywell Aerospace subsequently manufactured the device using its mature silicon-based nitride photonic integration process. The project combines academic research, quantum engineering and commercial manufacturing capabilities in a single R & D program.

Professor Daniel Blumenthal's research team has spent more than a decade reducing the size of cold atom quantum systems. Its focus is on moving complex experimental optics from large laboratory settings to chip-based platforms. The latest prototype devices expand this effort by directly connecting research and design with commercial manufacturing methods.

Infleqtion is based on research by SiNoptiq and UCSB

The technical office of the University of California, Santa Barbara manages the intellectual property rights supporting the photonic technology of the project. The university filed more than a dozen patent applications, and related research later supported the development of SiNoptiq. Professor Blumenthal founded SiNoptiq before Infleqtion acquired the photonic startup in 2024.

This acquisition adds expertise and technology in silicon photonics developed through long-term university research and development. It also enhances Infleqtion's ability to combine neutral atomic systems with smaller photonic components. The current project demonstrates how this research foundation supports devices designed specifically for commercial manufacturing.

Infleqtion continues to develop quantum computing and sensing systems around neutral atom technology. Optical cavities add a manufacturing-focused component to its effort to reduce system size and complexity. Honeywell Aerospace also offers a commercial manufacturing route that could support higher production volumes as deployments expand.
