The above calculations are simplified because the actual clearing level also depends on maintaining margin ratios, handling fees and the exchange's pricing mechanism.

What happens during serial liquidation?

When a leveraged long position hits the clearing threshold, the exchange begins to reduce or close the position. This actually creates additional selling pressure when the price of Bitcoin has already fallen. If enough long positions are concentrated in close price regions, the initial price decline may trigger the first set of liquidations. These mandatory selling actions will push the price of BTC further down, reaching the clearing line of the next batch of leveraged traders.

This process can create a self-reinforcing vicious cycle:

BTC prices fall → long positions are cleared → mandatory selling increases → BTC prices fall further → more positions are cleared

This is why Open Interest is particularly important during periods of extreme volatility. Open interest volume measures the total value of outstanding derivative positions, and abnormally high levels often indicate that there is still a large amount of leveraged funds active.

Why can the liquidation amount reach billions of dollars?

The reported liquidation totals refer to the total value of the positions closed, not just the cash deposited by the trader. For example, someone uses $10,000 as collateral to control a $100,000 position, and when the position is liquidated, their contribution to the liquidation amount is close to $100,000. Extend these to the hundreds of altcoins on Bitcoin, Ethereum and major derivatives exchanges, and the numbers will swell rapidly.

This dynamic is common when markets experience sharp sell-offs: relatively mild price declines at first often lead to more than $1 billion in cryptocurrency liquidations. Another leverage clearing demonstrated the same mechanism: once the main support level was lost, the mandatory closing of positions accelerated the price decline.
